A Vintage Vacation Elopement on the Isle of Wight

A Vintage Vacation Elopement on the Isle of Wight

WWW readers Sarah and Jamie decided to elope to the Isle of Wight for their wedding back in July. Along with their daughter, they took their friends to be their witnesses.

They decided to marry in a beautiful 15th Century Folly at Priory Bay Hotel and stayed at the stylish Vintage Vacations. Sarah looked effortlessly gorgeous in a dress by Minna, with a striking veil and tan ankle boots. Jamie wore a custom made vintage feel suit by Beggars Run while their sweet little girl wore a dress by I Love Gorgeous and flower headdress. They looked so lovely.

I so love the intimate setting for their day, the seaside shots and the pretty wild flower blooms. A dream wedding.

Thanks so much to the wonderful On Love and Photography for sharing their photographs with us today.

The Proposal… After a perfect sunny day strolling the beaches of Whitstable in November 2012, Jamie proposed on a scrabble board.

The Vision for the Day… Simple, no fuss & just the three of us. (Our 15 month old daughter Judy).

The Planning Process… We struggled with the idea of eloping, but after getting the blessing from family & friends we planned it very quickly. We already had our outfits in the making so it was just a matter of a location & flowers. We took our friends Claire & Sean to be our witnesses with their daughter Millie. Sean is currently in the process of making a video for our family & friends.

The Venue… The venue was a 15th Century Folly in the grounds of the Priory Bay Hotel in Seaview, Isle of Wight. In a glade set back from the sea it seemed perfect! We kept our fingers crossed for nice weather! After the ceremony we went down to the beach and then had a beautiful dinner in the Hotel’s restaurant.

The Dress + Accessories… My dress & veil was from Minna, shoes from Hobbs NW3 & boots were a vintage eBay find. My necklace with frog pendant belonged to my Nan & given to me when she passed away. I added a mother of pearl dove, a flea market find & a crystal ball pendant which was a 21st birthday present from my friends. My sister lent me my Nan’s watch as my something borrowed.

Finding the Dress… Minna was the only bridal shop I went to. After seeing their beautiful collection online and liking their ethics I was excited to see the dresses in person. Sophia there accessorised each dress I tried on with their belts & headpieces & then suggested a dress which I hadn’t thought of which happened to be the one I chose. Being in the hands of a dress designer & maker she knew the collection & which would suit my shape. I felt confident in her hands! The dress was made in house to my measurements.

Groom’s Attire… We went to the Most Curious Wedding Fair to find my dear husband a suit. We discovered Beggars Run. Cian there did an amazing job making Jamie’s custom suit & I would have married Jamie the moment he tried on the finished article. Tie from Peckham Rye & shoes from Saville Row.

The Readings + Music… Songs were: Sky Holds the Sun by the Bees, Piazza New York Catcher by Belle & Sebastian, English Rose by The Jam & Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles.

Beautiful Bridesmaids… Our daughter Judy wore dress & bloomers from ilovegorgeous.co.uk, Bloch baby ballet pumps & flower headpiece from rubyblu.co.uk/

The Flowers… Having seen a couple of blog posts on Isle of Wight Weddings, I saw the work of Flowers by Nic. I contacted her with images of what we were wearing & asked her for wildflowers where it looked like I had hand picked them. The results were astonishing. The bouquet, Jamie’s button hole & Judy’s corsage were far more beautiful than I could have imagined.

Your Photographer… After hiring our accommodation & the venue it became clear that this wasn’t going to be a standard registry elopement which we had initially planned on. I saw On Love & Photography at The Most Curious Wedding fair & loved how different & storytelling their photography is. They captured the day perfectly – exactly how I remembered it & were able to convey our story to our family & friends.

Sean is an animator & captured our day in the form of moving image which will be shown to our family & friends when we celebrate with them.

The Details + Decor… Being a designer, the details are important. I wanted it to be ‘low tech’ so location was everything. We stayed in Vintage Vacation’s The Mission which is like staying in a movie set. Being a vintage collector I loved all the furniture & knick knacks & surprised to see Tretchikoff coasters, from a collection of homewares I had designed whilst working for Hemingway Design. The venue & the beach were perfect in their own right that no décor was needed. I hand make bespoke typographic garlands for www.thebungaloo.tumblr.com and therefore took pride in making our ‘We got married’ garland.

The Honeymoon… We stayed on the Isle for a few more days, but our actual honeymoon will be later this year. We are looking in to visiting Sicily.

Memorable Moments… The folly was in a glade where the sunlight dappled in, the midges looked like glitter and butterflies were frolicking in their pairs. It made the day feel extraordinarily enchanting.

Advice for Other Couples… Regarding eloping – Remember that this wedding is about just the two of you. Don’t compromise what you want to keep other people happy. The people who care about you will understand & be happy for you.
