1940s retro beauty trend

The revival comes partly from the influence of “Hitchcock,” the biographical film about the iconic British director, starring Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren. And of course, there’s the continuing love affair that fashion designers have been having with the 60’s for several seasons now.

Cool and polished, these Hitchcock heroines possess an intriguing, aloof charm. As designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka note, it’s the enduring “paradox of the cool surface and the inner fire.” From Grace Kelly in “Rear Window” to Kim Novak in “Vertigo” and Janet Leigh in “Psycho,” the Hitchcock women manage to appear beautiful even in the throes of danger. Take Tippi Hedren in “Marnie” for example – her glossy textured hair is a key look this season, especially when worn in a sophisticated updo or small Victory rolls as spotted on the Carolina Herrera runway. The look is complemented by defined, arched starlet brows, generous blush on the apples of the cheeks, and yes—perfect, creamy red lips. Add a 2013 graphic update with Anna Sui’s winged feline eyes–a dark, slanted stroke on the upper lids, surprisingly offset by a dotted line under the eyes. If you’re the more discreet type, tone it down by going lighter on the application, but keeping the same feel. It’s a look sure to captivate even the toughest fans.
