3 Makeup Artist Tips for the Color Shy

color shy makeup tips

Dark, saturated lips and jewel tone eye colors may be two of the hottest beauty trends this fall, but as a professional makeup artist I’ve learned that not everyone is comfortable going big with color. If you’re feeling a little-color shy, have no fear—with the right product and application, it’s easier than you think to go bold. Here are 3 simple tips to get you started.

1. Start Slow

If you tend to shy away from color in your makeup routine, pick one area you'd like to enhance with color and start there. For instance, if you want to wear more color on your lips, let your lipstick be the only bold hue on your face, and keep the rest of the look simple. Try a sheer version of a bright lipgloss or lipstick to ease yourself into the look.

2. Try Colored Mascara

Switch it up subtly, by swapping your black mascara for a colored option. Most brands offer several colors, so pick your favorite and swipe away!

3. Choose Sheer Shadow

Eyeshadow normally looks extremely pigmented in packaging and most people don't realize that despite the first impression, you can make shadow look very light and sheer on the eyes. The trick is to blend, blend, blend the color down until it becomes almost like watercolor. A bright shadow that’s blended well is the perfect way to add soft color without being a distraction. Not into bright colors? Try a gold or bronze shadow first and apply it lightly to the lid with your finger or eyeshadow brush.
