Last October my sweet 17-year old cousin, Annika, suffered a massive brain bleed caused by a condition called AVM. After multiple brain surgeries, a 3-month hospital stay, and countless therapies, she was sent home to continue recovery. Annika is fully reliant on full-time caregivers, professional and family, as she still cannot move or even speak her own. Her care is, of course, quite expensive even though her family is fully insured. The co-pay for just one of her medications is over $400/month, for example, and the out-of-pocket cost for her wheelchair was in the thousands.
