Georgian Inspired Wedding at The Theatre Royal | Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

Being actors Sarah and Jack decided to hold their October 2013 wedding at The Theatre Royal, Suffolk; a venue where they have performed on numerous occasions. Reflecting the feel of the Theatre they had a subtle Georgian theme and also had personal touches such as paper flowers made from play scripts.

Sarah got ready in her dressing room at the Theatre and looked beautiful in a custom made dress made by her Mother teamed with a bountiful cascading bouquet, while the bridesmaids wore opulent gold dresses.

Thanks so much to the brilliant SND Photography for sharing her images with us this afternoon.

The Proposal... Having spent two years living in the beautiful city of Oxford, Jack proposed at the top of a 12 th century tower that formed part of the library of the college in which he studied. After (somewhat amazingly) persuading Sarah to climb the steep steps and rickety ladder to the summit, without telling her why, a bottle of champagne, and some French macaroons were produced to stack the odds of a positive response in Jack's favour. Luckily, she said yes. Otherwise, we'd have been stuck with a beautiful view, some lovely food and a terribly awkward silence.

The joy of the venue was that nowhere in the theatre was out of bounds, so guests could roam around and explore areas that audience members would not normally have access to.

The venue inspired us with a solution to a civil ceremony/blessing dilemma: We had a traditional civil ceremony, with registrar, and then had an interval (complete with ice-creams!) followed by a blessing from the wonderful Father John McKormac - a celebrant and family friend.

Everyone then piled out of the auditorium for champagne and canapés whilst the amazing catering team turned round the room, transforming it into a banqueting space for the wedding breakfast. After dinner, the room was cleared again into a dance space, whilst guests were treated to second deserts cheese and port (in the style of an Oxford college), in an upstairs bar. The auditorium then became the location for the first dance, cutting of the cake and dance floor for the rest of the evening.

The lovely thing about using the auditorium as a dance floor was that guest who didn't want to dance could sit in the audience seats, eating the bowl food that was provided throughout the night, still being part of the action and enjoying the atmosphere without having to dance!

Whilst looking for shoes, I came across a pair in the sale in M&S, which were the perfect shape and colour. I had antique shoe clips so wanted neutral shoes as a base to show them off. The best thing was, they were only £25!

Sarah's mother made Sarah's bouquet, the bridesmaids bouquets, the buttonholes and the table decorations, assembling the handmade flowers with fresh herbs and ivy. The room smelt delicious!

It is so beautiful that we didn't want to over-decorate so we stuck to fairy lights, ivy and bunting - we were also able to use the theatre lights to create extra atmosphere.

Our table plan was based on some of the plays that we have performed in, many of them in the Theatre Royal. Tables were named and identified using our copies of the scripts - complete with notes scribbled all over the text!

We made the favours ourselves - herb jelly in ceramic jars that we bought from Tiger Stores.

We wanted a fingerprint tree as we thought it was such a lovely idea, but made our own so that we could use an image of the theatre. This was really popular with guests and looks beautiful.

Food was given an autumnal, English, Georgian theme. The starter was a Georgian platter, including a mini pie and a mini (shot size) pint of Ale from the brewery across the road! Venison stew and sticky toffee pudding went down well too!

Sarah: one of the best things for me was getting ready on the day in my 'own' dressing room. I was able to sit and get ready, do my make-up and hair, at the dressing table that I'd sat at (getting nervous) before many, many performances! - in a funny way it helped ease my nerves! It did mean, however, that I'm probably the only bride in history that had to wait for the groom to turn up!

Early on in our relationship, we went to the Edinburgh Festival and Jack took me to a Tim Minchin gig (this is before he was uber famous). From then on I joked that I would only marry Jack if he got Tim Minchin to come and play at our wedding. I had forgotten about it but at the end of Jack's speech, a cinema screen appeared and I was treated to a 5 minute personal address from Tim that Jack had managed to wangle - it was amazing! Hysterically, most of the guests over the age of 50 had no idea who the man was, or why I was so shocked!
