Easy Eco-Friendly Improvements to Your Daily Routine

Nope, we're not talking about tossing out your makeup stash and dressing yourself in hemp. But there are a few simple things that you can do to make your daily beauty regimen more amenable to Mama Nature. Bonus karma points: These tips will totally do wonders for your look, too.

1. Avoid using disposable applicators. You need to invest in some decent eye shadow brushes anyway - a great set of brushes goes above and beyond any old 10-pack of sponge-tip applicators that will ultimately wind up in a landfill somewhere. The same goes for disposable makeup sponges. Just remember to cleanse your brushes once a week.

2. Take shorter showers. Used to taking 20-minute showers? (We've all been reluctant to hop out of the steamy shower on a cold night.) According to the Environmental Protection Agency, showering uses around 2.5 gallons of water per minute! Train yourself to take 10-minute-or-less showers at least a few times a week. Even little tweaks to your shower routine can help. For instance, try letting a replenishing hair masque, Masque Force Architecte from Kérastase , work its magic while you shave your legs with the water turned off.

3. Wash your hair less often. Not as gross as it sounds. Obviously, you should wash your hair if you're sweaty after a workout. But if you can avoid it, keep your tresses dry. Your hair will be easier to style, and you'll be saving gallons upon gallons of water. Need a pick-me-up between washes? Garnier Fructis Volume Extend Instant Bodifier Dry Shampoo can infuse new life into greasy hair: Just spritz on some dry shampoo, comb through to remove the residue, and voilà! Instant volume and shine.

4. Put down the curling iron. Save electricity by minimizing the amount of time spent using hair dryers, curling irons and other appliances. Try our heat-free waves (no curling iron necessary) to avoid using electricity completely.

5. Buy larger containers (and refill travel-size containers). Big-box stores like Costco and Sam's Club often carry your favorite brands in mega-sized containers, so look for a 40-ounce bottle of conditioner that will last you for months and months and reduce the number of little plastic 13-ounce bottles you zip through.
