Are You Following These 5 Outdated Beauty Rules?

Beauty trends come and go - while you may have shed a tear over the retirement of your glitter hairspray or sticky, shiny lip gloss (don't worry, if crimped hair can make a comeback, these can too), some goodbyes are forever. We've compiled a few classic examples of rules that were simply made to be broken. So go ahead: Say sayonara to each and every one of them.

1. Apply mascara to the top lashes only...

And only use one mascara at a time. With lashes, bigger is always better. Apply mascara to both sets of eyelashes, starting with the bottom. Then apply a coat each of two different types of mascara, such as one that volumizes, and one that lengthens, to really make your eyes pop.

Tip: Make sure you have a conditioning formula somewhere in there. Big lashes we want; brittle lashes, not so much.

2. Match your manicure and pedicure.

Getting a mani and pedi at once is a spa-day must, but that doesn't mean they have to look the same. Especially if you spend the majority of your day in a professional setting, you can opt for a subdued daytime look on your fingers like our neutral gradient mani, and use your toes to try more experimental nail art.

3. Shampoo your hair daily.

By now, you've probably heard that shampooing your hair daily can do more harm than good. You think: sure, going no 'poo may be right for her but definitely not me. But skipping a day or two has its benefits (and can be a total time saver), and after your hair gets used to the adjustment, you shouldn't have the oily looking locks you're used to after a day sans shampoo.

4. Over-pluck those brows.

OK, so few beauty experts have probably ever advised over-plucking, but it happens enough. If you find yourself plucking every little "stray" strand, give the tweezers a few weeks off and see if you can work with what nature gave you -you might be surprised! Big, bold brows are in, and we're pretty sure over-plucking never will be, even if Cara Delevingne herself said so.

5. Keep your office makeup neutral.

You might not want to wear your brightest lipstick to work, but with the emergence of more casual work places and companies who want to, you know, make their employees happy, people are enjoying a lot more freedom in how they present themselves than years past. Don't be afraid to wear bright makeup at work, as long as you don't overdo it. You spend eight hours a day there - might as well be yourself!
