We were fortunate enough to sit down with Erin Hornstein and some of her talented staff to learn what makes them such a unique group of florists. Balancing her family with work, Erin is as down to earth as the foliage she uses in her floral designs. Her love and appreciation for nature shows in her artistic arrangements and creative style. Read the exclusive interview below!

How would you describe your style?

I think we can do anything. I think that's something that sets us apart. We really do try to adapt to whatever the particular bride wants. We don't like to pigeon hole ourselves into one particular style. I think some people would probably brand us as more organic but, we like to believe that we can produce any type of look.

What sets us apart from other florists is really just the attention to detail and the customer service. We really take a lot of time in our proposal process and our planning to come up with unique ideas and really capture and create something that is in line with the bride's vision and budget for the day, as well as, what we feel is artistically beautiful.

What is the first thing you ask a couple when they come to you?

The first thing I ask them is, what is the most important part of their wedding to them. Is it the music, the food, etc. We love when everyone's first priority is flowers but that's not exactly the same for everyone and that's fine. It's great for us to know what they're focusing on. We have a questionnaire for our couples and that's one of the first questions that is on there. We ask a whole lot of other questions about color and style. We see a lot of brides and moms, a lot of brides and bridesmaids and sometimes the fiancés come and are completely interactive and other times they kind of zone out. We see a little bit of everything.

What is a typical day for you like?

We have kind of the same routine every week. On Tuesdays, we are cleaning up from the week before and putting stuff away as well as pulling out the supplies for what we need. We then make lists for the wholesaler which we go to on Wednesday. Wednesday's we'll start early and go to the dry good section to get all the supplies we need such as extra vases, wire, tape, ribbon, anything we've run out of. And then we head to the fresh side. We've put these orders in 2 weeks before so we know exactly what we're getting, what color their supposed to be and we really like to go and physically look at them. We're really picky about the quality of our products. If we have time, we'll do our weekly accounts afterwards and then Thursdays and Fridays are strictly design days.

Important factor for brides to consider when choosing a florist?

I think that it should be their unique style and the look that they want first. And then the right florist will harmonize that with their budget. Season wise - we can get a lot of things a lot of the time. There are a few exceptions but there is not that much of a difference. There are more bulk lower end options that brides can choose, but I can't speak for the quality of any of that product.

Do brides come to you with their ideas?

A lot of our brides come very educated about what they want. It can help us out but it is dependent on how well they are willing to hear our knowledge as well. If they have their heart set on something but, we feel based on our experience, either one thing is not going to be practical or it's not the right time of year for it - if they're open to that then it works out really, really well. They have that head start and then it's like a marriage of minds. But, if they are not open to it, it makes it more difficult because they already have their hearts set on something that we know practically isn't going to work.

If they come with absolutely no idea, it can often be overwhelming to them because there are so many options so, we do find that Pinterest and blogs and things like that do give brides a head start.

We usually require that they definitely have a venue and a date before we get started and if they don't have bridesmaids colors picked out, we usually want them to at least have some idea of their color scheme.

What inspires you?

Nature. Nature inspires me. I think there are so many times when I have to stop and just say, "Oh my God, that's gorgeous. Nobody dyed it or put it there, it's just beautiful." I love travelling. I love going to California and am always amazed by what things grow on the side of the road and just naturally thrive there. I have been to Hawaii and just thought that everything there is pretty phenomenal. I can be inspired in any type of setting like that whether it's a garden or just a really beautiful scene.

Any advice for our brides and grooms?

Trust us and let us be your advocate. Call us. Let us be the professionals and help you get really beautiful stuff. If you have a concern or don't understand something, just communicate with us and be honest. There's always a solution.
