Fun Fifities Wedding in Ireland: Suzie & Marc

Suzie and Marc were married in Cork in June. They wanted their wedding to be fun, with hints of the 1950s. They were inspired by their favourite movie, The Quiet Man, for their overall retro theme.

"Our wedding was a Irish festival with fifties touches", began Suzie. "Everything was unique in the sense that we wanted to make it our own and completely different to any other wedding we'd been to. Our venue was Glengarriff Lodge in Cork and was the perfect setting for our wedding as it is steeped in history. It is the former hunting lodge of The Earl of Bantry and is located on a man made island surrounded by The Glengarriff River and one of Ireland's only ancient natural forests."

"We did lots of DIY," she continued, "actually the whole wedding from start to finish was a DIY project. We started collecting and making stuff for the wedding about a year beforehand. We spent two days before the wedding setting everything up (with the help of family and friends) and we spent the following two days after the wedding taking everything down."

"Marc made all the wired handles and wooden stake holders for all 300 jam-jar lanterns. Marc also hung his own adaptation of Irish crossroad signposts from one of the trees using original 1920s Irish street signs. I made the invites, table names, table runners, menus, mass booklets, kids activity books, various signs and posters, guest VIP lanyards, personalised napkins, and photo wall."

"Setting it all up was actually pretty good fun. The best thing about the wedding was the weather though. It was absolutely AMAZING, especially for Ireland. We were so lucky it was 27 °C on the day!"

"But the real highlight for us both was the ceremony. This surprised us both as we originally wanted to get married at our reception venue but decided on a church wedding to please our parents. It was just so relaxed, fun and really special. Father Tom was absolutely brilliant. We just laughed, smiled and really enjoyed it. We also loved our first dance with our doggies!"

"Although we spent double what we originally budgeted, we saved money by buying my dress from Oh My Honey online", she concluded. "The wedding was in June, I ordered my dress at the end of March and it arrived the end of May, just in time! It fitted perfectly and I absolutely LOVED it. It was just perfect and I didn't have to spend an absolute fortune on it."
