How Do I Ask Guests to Turn off their Cell Phones | MS Bridal Guru

Dear The Bridal Guru,

I was recently at a wedding. As the priest was asking the bride and groom to give their vows, it got very silent...until, a cell phone went off. I don't want this to happen at my wedding. What can I do to ensure that our guests will turn off their phones?

Dear Mary in Marion,

I don't know which is worse: a baby crying in the middle of the vows or a phone going off. Neither belong at a wedding (in The Bridal Guru's opinion). What can you do so you don't have the same scenario at your friend's wedding? Here are several suggestions:

  1. In the program that the guests receive, you can ask that all phones be silenced or turned off.
  2. Have a cell phone check-in. Guest will check-in their phones like a coat check. When the ceremony or wedding is over, they can get their phones back.
  3. Before the ceremony, the officiant can ask the guests to turn off their phones or silence them.

These are polite ways to ask guests to be respectful of you, your groom, the ceremony and your wedding. Best wishes on your upcoming wedding and may there be no cries from babies and no rings, chirps, guitar, piano and other ring tones from phones.
