The Right Ways to Cover Gray Hair

There are a few necessary evils in life that we just can't seem to duck or hide from: bathing suit shopping, jury duty, the dentist. Probably the most dreaded evil that follows us wherever we go is aging. No matter what we do, we can't stop time from marching across our faces and our crowning glory - our hair. Those silvery gray strands seem to pop up when you least expect it. And plucking one isn't an option as seven more silver delights will show up to the first one's funeral. So what's a girl to do when her hair starts to sprout grays? We got the scoop from two hair pros - New York-based stylist Zachary Morad and Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham on how to cover up those silver strands the right way!

Full-Dimensional Color.
For those of you with more than just a few strands of silver who don't feel like rocking the Helen Mirren, full-gray look, Cunningham has the perfect product. "Gray hair can be a difficult look to pull off, so for those of us wanting to cover it all up, there's Redken CHROMATICS Beyond Cover," Cunningham says. "This miracle product was specifically created for those with 75 percent or more grays. It gives clients multidimensional coverage and leaves their hair twice as fortified and smooth. It's the best-kept secret in Hollywood!"
Root Touch Ups.

If you are in the preliminary stages of gray, try a quick-fixer. Touch-up products like Oscar Blandi Pronto Colore Root Touch-Up and Highlighting Pens temporarily disguise roots, cover gray and enhance highlights with a professional, natural-looking finish. They also come in multiple hair color options and are small enough to carry around in your purse for quick fixes!
Strategic Highlights.

If you are just starting to notice grays and want permanent-yet-easy coverage, Cunningham suggests you add highlights to help conceal and camouflage the new growth. "A great way to blend the gray and give it tone is by using a product like Redken Shades EQ Cream, which gives long-lasting shine and low-commitment gray coverage," she says. You can also give products like Matrix SOCOLOR Grey't Naturals a try!
Embrace It.

Another avenue for addressing gray hair is not an obvious one, says Morad. "There are so many options for women who are experiencing gray hair for the first time. While many panic at the first sight of silver, I think there's an option that isn't even on women's radars: Embrace it," says Morad. "Gray hair isn't something to be fearful of. With the right haircut and confidence, it can be one of the chicest accessories to your look."
