Gorgeous Wedding Cakes

Is it too soon after the pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, hot toddy free-for-all to drool over some wedding cakes? We don't think so. These buttercream and fondant stunners are everything a guest will ooh and ahh over, proclaiming your wedding to be the absolute best. Get ready for some very delicious, very pretty cakes to make you realize you might want to divert some funds to your cake budget...

These first three cakes are all about a statement, from sleek and modern stripes (above) for an equally refined wedding to flowering cascades (below, right) fit for a garden fete. Geometric patterns are still a huge trend, and fondant makes for a stylish medium in the cake below (left). All of these cakes could easily be the centerpiece of your celebration, and certainly not content for some far corner at your venue.

If you want to keep it traditional and sweet, but still want something extra fantastic, these cakes should inspire you. They all play a bit with monochromatic style. Above, this pale blue cake features an elaborate pattern in a shade just slightly lighter. And below, from white-on-white to chocolate in all different textures, we see it doesn't take bright and shiny to make an unforgettable cake.

Similarly, this lace pattern cake below adds texture and interest in shades of white and ivory. If you want this for your event, take a photo of the lace on your wedding dress so that your cake designer can recreate the intricate pattern in fondant.

Of course, this year's weddings have been all about the metallic razzle-dazzle. And these cakes are proof-positive that you can make all that glitters work into just about any theme. Above, they went all-out-take-no-prisoners glam with this cake table. The gold sequined table linens and mercury glass votives add to the power of all of the metallic accents on the cakes.

Below, take gold in a softer direction by adding pink, such as with this confetti cake (below, left) and this scrumptious design with rose garland (below, right).

You can even use this modern trend in a very vintage sort of way. This cake below uses gold accents and an elaborate topper to exude a very 1930s vibe.

But don't forget that cakes can also be the most whimsical and frivolous aspect of your wedding. This cake above highlighted the bride and groom's love of the Sunday morning word search.

You can also highlight the season of your wedding. Herald spring with a lovely hand-painted floral design (below, left) or give a nod to chillier temperatures with an elaborate Aran knit pattern and plaid cake (below, right).
