As a smoky, red wine color, marsala, Pantone's Color of the Year for 2015, is probably not the most obvious choice for an eye shadow. But that unexpected element also makes it so fun. While we're probably not going to start wearing a strong red on our eyes every day, there are flattering ways to incorporate this great color.


According to the color experts at Pantone, marsala combines dramatically with neutrals, including warmer taupes and grays. We can't wait to try it as an accent with our go-to neutral shadows. Pair something like Giorgio Armani Beauty Eyes to Kill Solo in 5 with a gray like Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Snare or a taupe like Maybelline ExpertWear Eyeshadow Singles in Tastefully Taupe.

Because of its burnished undertones, Pantone says sultry marsala is highly compatible with amber, umber and golden yellows. So for those with hazel eyes, a dash of marsala, combined with a yellow-gold eye shadow, will bring out the yellow flecks that make your eyes so unique. Marsala also contrasts nicely with vibrant blues and greens. For those with green eyes, go for an orangey-brick shade like Lancôme Paris Color Design in Mannequin. Those with brown eyes can play with marsala to accent a metallic-bronze eye shadow like NYX Cosmetics Glam Shadow in Soprano.

Since marsala is such a bold color, it's best to try it first on the top lids.
