Shades of Grey: Three Ways to Wear Grey Eye Shadow

Shades of Grey: Three Ways to Wear Grey Eye Shadow

There are certain colors that seem to fly under the eye shadow radar, and we believe grey is definitely one of them. This gunmetal shade is either classified as too dark for daytime wear or too light for sultry, smoky looks. Truth is, there is so much that can be done with grey eye shadow, if we would only take the time to tap into its limitless possibilities. To help shed light on this underrated shade, we enlisted the help of makeup pros Emma Willis and Diana Shin to show us three different ways to utilize grey!

Look #1: Soft & Subtle

Step 1: Prime the eyelids with concealer or eye primer for long lasting wear. Using a small shadow brush, press a light grey eye shadow onto the inner corner of the eye. Willis used shade #1 from the L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Dual Effects in Incredible Grey.

Step 2: Using a larger, flat shadow brush, work a slightly deeper, steel-colored grey (like shade #2 from the shadow quad used above) onto the outer corner of the eye and buff it out. Apply the same shade along the lower lash line using a small, flat brush.

Step 3: Apply a volumizing mascara (like YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Shocking) to the upper and lower lashes.

Step 4: Finish the look with a soft, peach lip gloss like L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Glossy Balm in Ginger Candy.

Look #2: Dark Diva

Step 1:
Cover the lid with charcoal, grey eyeliner like NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Gunmetal Grey. Lightly blend the color into the crease with a flat shadow brush. Be sure to blend the edges, so it smokes out!

Step 2: Apply a black or dark grey shadow to the lid and blend it in well, so it goes into the crease.

Step 3: Line the bottom lash line with the black or dark grey shadow and smudge it using a smudge brush.

Step 4: Apply concealer or a nude shadow right under your brows to define the browline.

Step 5: Swipe on a nude lipstick and add a touch of clear lip gloss if you prefer a non-matte look.

Look #3: Holy Smokes

Step 1: Press taupe, grey shadow (like Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Desperation) onto the lid using a flat shadow brush. Blend the color into the crease with a fluffy brush.

Step 2: Press a light pink, pearly shadow (like Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow in Space Cowboy) onto the inner half of the lid.

Step 3: Line the upper and lower waterline with a black gel liner.

Step 4: Finish off with a lengthening mascara (like L'Oréal Paris Telescopic Shocking Extensions).
