Our offbeat wedding at a glance:

As a huge horror fan, I was ecstatic that my husband agreed to a Halloween-themed wedding! Our invitations were custom-drawn by our good friend Chris Butler and modeled after one of the Haunted Mansion stretching portraits. He drew me as one of my favorite Universal Monsters and people to cosplay as, The Bride of Frankenstein and Josh as Duke Nuke'm, the costume he was wearing when I met him at Dragon*Con many moons ago.

Nearly everything in our wedding was handmade, including many of our decorations, our Universal Monster card box (thanks mom!), our centerpieces, and even the inside of our guestbook. The guestbook itself was the Necronomicon from Evil Dead, one of my favorite films. The entire wedding was a blast, and of course costumes were required.

Speaking of costumes, Josh used his Marine Corp dress blues as an inspiration for his Aquaman costume (a favorite character of his) and I did a mermaid to match.

Tell us about the ceremony:

We lined the pathway to the gazebo with jack o' lanterns and my father, dressed as Gomez Addams, walked me down the aisle. My daughter Karma was my flower girl (dressed as Wednesday Addams) and one of my closets friend's sons was our ring bearer (he was dressed as the Flash).

Our good friend Sabre married us as Ming the Merciless. He of course made me swear to be okay with being shot out into space. We were surrounded by our best friends, all dressed in costumes. Both my wedding dress and wedding costume were made by a friend of mine, Christine Silver. She told me when we first met she wanted to make my wedding dress. And she did. It was everything I've ever wanted. The train was made by Tiffany Kennison.

Tell us about your reception:

The reception was a "til' death do us party." The Danville has a movie theater built upstairs where we played Nightmare Before Christmas and Ghostbusters for the little ones in to keep them entertained. And since it was Halloween and they couldn't go trick or treating, we had pumpkins filled to the brim with candies and toys.

For the adults, we had an excellent DJ and delicious catering. From the candy table to the horror finger foods (including a pumpkin puking guacamole) everything was themed. Our cake sat on a blood-pouring fountain and was a layered cemetery-themed cake with a tombstone that read our last name. The little tombstones in the cemetery had our names on them, as well as our daughter's, and of course our other baby, our Great Dane rescue.

The cake was topped with a groom's cake that unfortunately collapsed before the ceremony. However, my bridesmaids stepped it up and used extra skulls and props lying around to fix it up, and honestly, I barely noticed. Our good friend made us amazing bloody broken glass cupcakes as well, with custom tombstones stands to complement the cake. Even our caterers got into the mood with the bloody aprons. Everyone was drinking and dancing to "Thriller" well into the morning.

What was your most important lesson learned?

The biggest challenge I had for this wedding was how much I took upon myself to do. From crafting to planning, I put a lot of stress on myself and I would highly recommend to future couples to reach out for help when you need it. But it was all so worth it in the end.
