The best thing about shooting the Empire State Building is the reflection of the UFO-like chandelier

It was unbelievably cold on day one of NYFW, so you can imagine what it was like once night fell. And on the West Side of NYC? Bitter. Our cab driver said the city was quiet; clearly most people weren't crazy enough to venture out in that wind chill. But we were pretty excited about seeing Swedish singer Seinabo Sey performing, so no polar vortex could keep us in.

Mia Moretti, Margot, Thaddeus O'Neill, Vogue's Kristin Tice-Studeman and more were among the low-key crowd that turned up at the Top of The Standard for the event. The room is an event in itself, any night of the week. The Roman & Williams-designed 18th Floor space is probably the most beautiful space in all of New York City, and the view is even more stunning. Look one way for One World Trade Center and turn your head for the Empire State Building. It's essentially impossible not to enjoy oneself.

As the first night of Fashion Week, most people were easing themselves in, taking it easy so as not to peak too soon. Editor Peter Davis, dapper in a suit, told us it was his look for the week. "It's so much easier than trying to look cool," he said.

Post-midnight, Seinabo Sey gave a wonderful, soulful performance with a jazzy voice reminiscent of Amy Winehouse and the charm to match. If you're not familiar, download her album Pretend immediately!
