The industry is changing, that seems to be the consensus. But with all of the streamed shows, musicians minting collections, fast fashion and bloggers as industry critics, the old adage rings true: the more things change, the more they stay the same.
New York Fashion Week Fall 2016 was a giant circus of stars and star-chasers. Black was back, with gothic overtones. And as fashion looked forward, it couldn't help but glance back to the '70s and '90s. Here are the things that we think are notable from NYFW Fall 2016.
- Lady Gaga walked in towering boots for Marc Jacobs. Although the diva's presence was momentous, the dramatic clothes and theatrical presentation required no gimmicks.
Image: InDigital 2. Weather is fickle. As if to indicate the effect global warming will have on our fashion choices, New York experienced clear skies, wind, snow and rain this week, posing a conundrum when it came to clothes.
3. Diane von Furstenberg anointed the new crew of supermodels with a show that was really a swanky cocktail party complete with a leggy conga line.
4. Kanye premiered season three of his Yeezy fashion line at Madison Square Garden. A crowd of 18,000 came to see the clothes and celebrities in attendance (including the whole Kardashian/Jenner clan) and to hear his new album, The Life of Pablo.
5. Faux and real fur was on and off the runway. No matter how you feel about the trend, it was impossible to ignore in New York. Perhaps due to the chilly weather and its long maligned reputation, furry fluff was the stuff on shoulders this season.
6. Donna Karan New York's new designers Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow (the pair behind Public School) gave the line a streetwear bent and some clever new takes on the acronym DKNY with sweatshirts that ended the show but continued out into the street.
7. Alexander Wang went a little Miley Cyrus with clothes emblazoned with pot leaves and pole dancers. To top it off, his models looked strung out in their mesh, leather and faux-fur creations, as they trotted down a runway in St. Bartholomew's church. Scandalous.
8. Pretty men, handsome ladies: the gender binary continues to collapse both in terms of clothing and casting. Just as women walked in shows during Men's Fashion Week, there were men on the runways of Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, Anna Sui and others.
9. Rihanna brought the house down with her Fenty x Puma collection. If it wasn't clear that streetwear and music have beset Fashion Week, then RiRi's crazy trainers, plush hoodies and gothleisure mesh dresses drove the message home.
10. It's all on social media. Kanye's show was streamed on TIDAL to 20 million viewers. Naturally, Diane von Furstenberg's show spawned oodles of Instagrams. And most American designers and fashion models are just a Snapchat away.
