The safety of the little black dress is that it works for every occasion-and with every makeup look. So you have to give props to a girl who takes a risk on a brilliantly bright frock-in orange, no less-and succeeds in nailing the perfect makeup look to go with it (no easy feat!). That girl would be Kate Bosworth, who rocked a hot-off-the-spring-2011-runway Proenza Schouler dress at last week's Fashion Group International Awards in New York and paired it with flawless pinky-coral makeup that managed to stand out without clashing with her vibrant sheath. I love this look so much that I phoned Daniel Martin, Kate's makeup artist for the event, to find out what he used on her and get his tips for the best makeup to wear with a bold-colored ensemble. THE CONCEPT: "The Proenza boys like clean makeup with one feature pumped up, so I focused on Kate's brows, then gave her soft cheeks and lips to balance things out," says Daniel. "It's basically a more wearable version of the hair and makeup from their spring 2011 show." THE MAKEUP: EYES: "I swept a shimmery champagne shadow on inner corners of Kate's lids and a matte taupe-y shadow about two shades deeper than her skin tone on the outer corners," says Daniel. For a similar look, try Maybelline New York Expert Wear Eye Shadow Singles in Linen and Earthy Taupe. "Kate has really long lashes, but they're light-colored, so I used Lancôme Définicils High Definition Mascara on her because it separates and adds definition without looking too heavy. I didn't even need to add eyeliner because the mascara made her lashes look so intense." BROWS: "We played them up by making them a few shades darker than her hair color," says Daniel, who filled in Kate's brows with a tinted brow cream. "It intensifies the color of the brows in a way that looks more natural than using pencil or powder," he says, adding that you can get a similar effect using a tinted brow gel. "Instead of applying it with the applicator wand, paint it on using an angled brow brush," he says. Try Lancôme Modèle Sourcils brow gel and Shu Uemura Natural Brush 6ob. CHEEKS: "Kate has strong cheeks naturally, so they don't require much defining," says Daniel. He rubbed Lancôme Éclat Miracle Illuminator, a pearlescent highlighter, on the highest points of Kate's cheeks, dusted a matte taupe blush along her cheekbones (try L'Oréal Paris Feel Naturale Blush in Au Natural), and swirled a pinky-orange powder blush on her apples. LIPS: "First I dabbed Lancôme Effacernes Waterproof Concealer on her lips to neutralize their natural rosiness," says Daniel. "It works great on the mouth because it's waterproof so it doesn't move one it dries, and it helps your lipstick color last." He then swiped on Lancôme Chris & Tell lipstick, a light coral color that he patted on to her lips with his finger for a stain-like finish. THE LESSON: "With a bright dress, you need a little color on your face-otherwise you can look washed out," says Daniel. "Try light coral-y pinks on your cheeks and lips-they add just the right amount of vibrancy. And lightly define your eyes with black pencil along your top lash line and lots of mascara."
