There's nothing quite as special as being a bridesmaid on your friend's big day! Whether it's your first bridesmaid gig or your 50th, here's a cheat sheet to help you remember all the to-do's.

  1. Help with pre-wedding tasks: Offer to help the bride with a specific planning task such as stuffing invitations, or shopping for a certain wedding item.
  2. Buy bridesmaid dress and accessories: Find a bridesmaid dress and all accessories including shoes and jewelry. Purchase all the items, and make sure to break in your shoes before the day of the wedding.
  3. Help to plan and cohost pre-wedding parties: Work with the other bridesmaids to help plan, host and pay for the bachelorette party and bridal shower.
  4. Help to Track gifts & RSVPs: Unless someone is already helping with this task, keep track of all the gifts received at all the pre-wedding events so that it's easier for the couple to write thank-you notes; also keep RSVP lists.
  5. Attend the ceremony rehearsal: Attend the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Also be aware of any other pre-wedding parties and try to attend as many as you can.
  6. Run last minute errands: Help with any last-minute errands, especially on the day of the wedding. Be ready to step in (if there is no wedding planner) to confirm flower delivery times and greet the ceremony officiant when they arrive.
  7. Receiving line: Stand in the receiving line if the bride requests it.
  8. Hosting duties at the reception: Help with hosting duties at the wedding reception by introducing guests, making sure they know where the bar is, and inviting them to sign the guest book.
  9. Hit the dance floor: Help keep the party alive by getting out on the dance floor when the music begins, and dance with the groomsmen following the official first dance of the bride & groom. Keep an eye on guests who might need a little encouragement to get out on the dance floor.
  10. Help the bride with the wedding gown: Help the bride with wedding gown duties such as carrying or bustling the train, restroom visits, or helping fix the train if anything comes unhooked.
  11. Purchase a wedding gift: Talk to the other bridesmaids about pitching in for a joint wedding gift. That way you can get more creative and come up with a great idea and with more buying power.
  12. Be a trooper: Even if you don't like the bridesmaid dress, or if you get frustrated with anything else during the planning process, try not to complain about it and be as tactful as you can.
  13. Provide emotional support: Be there for the bride to provide emotional support throughout the planning process and especially on the day of the wedding.
