How to Dress Up Your Hoodie | Nordstrom Fashion Blog
By now, we're all up to speed on the dominance of the fashion sneaker. Worn to work, with dresses for a night out and front row during Fashion Week, kicks have become a perennial shoe option regardless of the outfit or outing.
Based on our extensive street reconnaissance, we can now report that the fashion hoodie is the next activewear piece to get the all-the-time treatment. We spoke with our Nordstrom styling director, Ruth Basloe, about all the ways to wear the hooded sweatshirt now, including with suits, dresses and heels.
"While you can go head-to-toe athleisure these days, I prefer incorporating authentic, or authentic-inspired, athletic pieces when I want to give my outfit a more relaxed attitude," Ruth tells us. From what we're seeing, the fashion fold agrees. Hoodies top off prim pencil skirts and cocktail dresses, anchoring them in the every day. "My favorite new way to wear a hoodie is to pair a solid, gym-class-issued style with something tailored and textured like a dress trouser or a blazer," says Ruth. This look is great for the office.
"The second way I really like to wear a hoodie is [with] something fancy or fussy like my fringe or lace skirts," says Ruth. "Or you could also go in the opposite direction and pair with something edgier like the new high-shine mini skirts that are trending." Wear a hoodie with a fun skirt for cocktails or a girls night out.
"If you have a hoodie that is fitted enough, you could also try wearing it as a layer under a structured sleeveless dress. You just want to make sure you don't see the bulkiness under the dress," Ruth advises. This is your new office-to-party look.
According to Ruth: "If you have a hoodie that is oversized and longer, it could just stand on it's own as a dress, but instead of the expected sneaker try wearing with something more polished like a bootie. If the hoodie is not quite long enough, try layering over a shirt dress and allow the shirttails to show." Can you think of a better brunch outfit than a giant sweatshirt-dress?
