The deep side parts seen on spring runways like DKNY, Rodarte and Charlotte Ronson have us itching to update our less-than-exciting middle parts. If you're not quite ready to take to the shears or flaunt a new color, changing up your part is the next best thing: "Changing a [hair] parting can instantly shift the look of your hairstyle and facial features," saysNina Dimachki , professional hairstylist and artistic design director of Kérastase Paris . "Plus if your hair is fine, changing your part can give it more volume and make it appear thicker." Since our hair isn't always cooperative (understatement of the year), we asked Dimachki to give us her expert tips on how to change a natural part (cowlicks included). Read on for her tips...
1. Get Gelled: The key to switching up your natural part and tackling stubborn cowlicks? Gel. "Apply a strong gel at the root area when the hair is wet to hold the new direction of hair," says Dimachki. She recommends Kérastase Paris Forme Fatale for a strong yet pliable hold.
2. Direct It: After applying gel, Dimachki says to use medium tension and blow dry the root area with a fine-toothed comb in the new direction you want your hair to part. The gel you applied to this area will help hold your hair in place as you style. "Just make sure to blow dry the cowlick or bang area first, before it begins to air dry," advises Dimachki.
3. Per Usual: Finish the rest of the hairstyle as desired.

If you're expecting your natural part to immediately shift over, you might be disappointed. "It's a good idea to give yourself a few days to get adjusted to the new parting," says Dimachki. The good news is that even though your locks will need time to adjust, Dimachki says that it usually only takes two to three days for the scalp to relax and become used to the new direction.
