"After I lost my dad in the September 11 attacks, I associated his birthday with sadness. That’s until I met Omar. We started a tradition of going to the memorial where I’d write a little message on a balloon and release it. It changed my outlook of his birthday from a day of sadness to a day of celebration. Recently, Omar lost his brother, so this Christmas he suggested we go to the memorial and let a balloon go for him, too. When I released mine, the wind blew in the perfect direction and I was so preoccupied watching it go, that when I turned around Omar was down on one knee.
