Dear Ivanka, I was up three times last night night. First: S had "booboos" on her feet (mosquito bites, calamine), second: C had a night terror, then she needed a "new fresh" bottle, third: C's diaper was soaked in pee so I changed it then lay awake staring at the ceiling composing this letter in to you. The day after the election I wrote my editor at Vogue and asked if I could interview you over lunch. So naive; I actually thought if I developed a direct line of contact to you then by proxy I could develop a direct line of contact to your Dad and somehow the world would be better because of it. So dumb, I know. Vogue said no. I don't blame them. I keep thinking of what the Martin Niemoller said after World War II: "First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. I know that he listens to you. I believe that you are a good mother. I believe you know a child belongs in her mother's arms. I believe you know that ripping a child away from her mother is terrifying and abusive and evil and will lead to life-long trauma. I woke up this morning in bed with my sleeping daughters, sick to my heart and stomach for the 2,000+ kids in tinfoil “sheets” behind chain link fences in Texas, were you?
