Wedding - Stone Fox Bride

Stone Fox Bride

I was in my studio on 7th street listening to classic rock on the radio when the first plane hit. The DJ said: "I'm looking at something so strange on the TV I can't even explain it — everyone, just put the TV on." I was 24. I didn't know what was going on. I walked to the Astor Place 6 train and got a coffee from the Mud Truck. Everyone on the subway was talking to each other, like we were friends sitting across a long table at a big dinner party. I worked at YM Magazine. My office was across from Madison Square Park. It was Fashion Week. My boss said: are the shows cancelled? The publisher said, Go home, go home. But I had no home to go to. I took off my high heels and ran down 6th Avenue. The entire sky was black. I watched the second tower fall from the roof of a building on the corner of Broadway and Lafayette. Then my boyfriend and I walked to Shark Bar on Mott Street and ordered two beers and sat at the bar. It was 10:30 in the morning. I've told this story before and someone always says: you idiot dilettante, getting wasted while the world exploded around you. And yes, that's true. I was 24 years old. I had just moved to New York. I was lost. And whether I was living through the worst day in the world, or a blue sky afternoon, I never had any idea where to go, ever. I sat at the bar as the sky fell down drinking beer after beer after beer. At one point, a man walked in. His suit was soaked, stained, smeared in ash. Ash in his hair. Ash all over. He sat on a stool and ordered a drink. He smelled like a campfire. He was still holding a briefcase. I've spent seventeen years trying to find a word to describe what his eyes looked like. #regram @latonyayvette
