Wedding - Kat Williams

Kat Williams

Sometimes I just can’t get over the fact another human has vowed to spend the rest of their days with me. Most of the time I look, to put it mildly, like utter shit. We work from home so for 95% of the time I’m all sweatpants and slippers, hair scrapped back, glasses on and not a single scrap of make up on my face. We’re also renovating our home so we live in a literal building site. A glamourous life this is not. I was thinking about weddings vs marriage recently when it hit me: A marriage is about as far from a wedding as anything could be. On your wedding day you put on a fancy dress, get all made up and quaff champagne like its going out of style. When you’re married, you go about your everyday existence just happy that this one special person is right by your side. A marriage isn’t a wedding. A marriage is a life-long commitment to spend forever with someone, day in and day out, however mundane, boring or sweatpants-filled those days may be. A marriage is in those moments of frustration, sadness or grief, having that one person to hold your hand, hug you tightly and tell you everything is going to be OK. A marriage isn’t exciting and new every day, it’s the small things like who washes the dishes, who takes the bins out and if you decide to start a family or not. It’s kisses before bedtime, laugher at the stupidest things and knowing that though anything that life could throw at you, this one person will be there to share it with you. Always. A wedding is a lovely day, some might say the BEST day, but a marriage... that’s where the real magic happens.
