Package Perfect Eyes: How To Make Your Eye Shadow Shade Match the Color on the Box

The excitement of experimenting with new eye shadow is real. But sometimes this excitement is followed by disappointment when the shadow color of our dreams doesn't seem to translate to our eyelids. The blue doesn't pop the way it does in the palette, the sheer green turns into a muddy gray or the nude-pink just looks, well, nude.

What gives? Well, at long last, we know: Your shadow color, combined with your skin color, is what you're seeing in the mirror. To get the color you originally wanted, you need to create a blank canvas first.

Step 1. To get started, make sure your eyelids are clean and dry. Then, prime your lids. Use a primer or base product, like Lancôme Aquatique Waterproof Eyecolour Base. (A bonus of using primer? It keeps shadow from creasing or fading.)

Step 2. Apply a matte white eye shadow over the lid, like Lancôme Color Design Infinité 24H Crease-Free Luminous Eye Shadow in Continuous Crème. You can also use a white eyeliner if you're in a pinch. We like NYX Cosmetics Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk.

Your lids are now ready to apply the eye shadow of your dreams! Want proof it works? Apply a swatch of eye shadow to bare skin on the back of your hand. Then, next to that swatch, use this technique. You won't believe your eyes.
