Sweet Pastel Pretty & Crafty Village Hall Wedding - Whimsical...

via

This real wedding report really struck me, you know right there. This couple are the sweetest, with so much love for one another. From their proposal to the planning Dan really wanted to make Charlotte very happy. His words at the bottom of the feature are a must read.

WWW readers Daniel and Charlotte tied the knot on the 2nd August 2014 in Kent. They found Lower Hardres Village Hall which was the perfect blank canvas for their creative countryside wedding. They crafted so many pretty details, with hand decorated jam jars filled with blooms, DIY kraft paper stationery, reams of bunting and stunning festoon lights.

Charlotte wore lace with flowers in her perfectly styled hair while Daniel wore a three piece navy suit. They looked gorgeous.

Thanks so very much to Ruby-Roux Photography for sharing these lovely images with us today.

THE PROPOSAL | I proposed to Charlotte in Paris on Valentine's Day in 2012. In the evening after dinner we walked over to the Pont des Arts a foot bridge which crosses the River Seine. This is known as the 'Lovelock' bridge because couples attach padlocks to it with their inscriptions on, before throwing the key in to the river as a sign of their commitment to one another. We attached our own padlock and when Charlotte turned around I was on one knee with an engagement ring in my hand!

THE VISION | We wanted our special day to be one big family get together along with some of our close friends. We knew we wanted a vintage feel for our reception with some bits inspired by Paris - which tied in with where we got engaged. We decided we wanted our reception in a village hall because we could take ownership of all the décor and be as creative ourselves as we wanted to be.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | Charlotte started planning the wedding before I stood up after being on one knee! We spent two and a half years planning our wedding booking our reception venue first and then the larger details such as our church, transport, flowers, and photographer. Charlotte had lots of inspiration pinned to various pinterest boards and we began visiting wedding fairs. It became a project for me, and I really took charge of planning everything. I spent a lot of spare time arranging things and making things. I wanted to make it the most special day for us both and I wanted Charlotte to be bowled over by it all on the day. Luckily as well, my step dad has a wealth of experience at catering for large numbers of people at sporting events and kindly offered to plan and deliver all of the catering for our big day. He designed the menu, sourced the waiting staff, sourced the food, prepped the food and meticulously planned every other detail in that area for us. As we were only paying costs for food and drink, we knew this would save us a huge amount of money and meant we could spend more on other things. We were so incredibly lucky we had someone who was willing and able to play such a huge role in our big day and this really helped us to keep costs down and spend bigger on other things.

BUDGET | £10,000 (+ £3,000 for our honeymoon)

THE VENUE | We knew we wanted somewhere that we could personalise ourselves, but we also wanted somewhere in the countryside with a quiet, idyllic setting capable of accommodating our 100 or so guests. We heard from someone about a village hall outside of Canterbury, in Lower Hardres, and went to visit it. We knew straight away it was for us. It was light and open, it had lots of outdoor space which would be ideal in the summer, and we could picture our families outside with a glass of Pimms enjoying our day. We booked Lower Hardres Village Hall straight away at a bargain price. It was a good job we did as the venue is becoming highly sought after and is now booked up well in advance. We could have the venue for the whole weekend which was perfect as we needed a whole day to set up the venue as we wanted it. We put two marquees in the grounds too, one for an outdoor bar and another for a barbecue and a chocolate fountain in the evening. I couldn't imagine getting married anywhere else. For us, it was our dream reception venue. In terms of the ceremony, Charlotte is Catholic so we chose the beautiful Catholic church - St Thomas of Canterbury - in the town centre and close to the cathedral, which opens its doors on to narrow cobbled streets.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | Dress Designer: White Rose Bridal, Bridal Way, Broadstairs, Kent.

Charlotte: Dan bought me a delicate plain diamond pendant Tiffany necklace as a wedding gift and I haven't taken it off since!

FINDING THE DRESS | Charlotte: I found my dress in Bridal Way in Broadstairs - a beautiful shop where you are given a wonderful personalised service. I had two of my bridesmaids with me when I tried on the 'one'. I will never forget that moment when I knew we had found the wedding dress for me!

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Dan: I wore a three piece navy suit purchased from Moss Bros. I wanted something modern and stylish so I opted to steer away from classic grooms wedding attire and go for something that I knew I would feel more comfortable in. Although I wanted something a little less formal, I was conscious that I still wanted to stand out in what I was wearing. I didn't want to look like I was going to a meeting! I knew from the start that I wanted to wear a suit in navy and something in a slim looking fit. I teamed the suit with a white shirt, navy spotted silk tie, plain white pocket square and dark brown brogues by Kurt Geiger.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | The music was very traditional at the wedding due to having a traditional Catholic service.

Hymns: Give me joy in my heart, Be still for the presence of the Lord, Walk in the light.

Readings: First letter of St Paul to the Corinthians.

Signing of the register music: Ave Maria Clarinet Solo by Charlotte's cousin; Ciaran.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Charlotte: We had four bridesmaids including three of my closest friends Catie, Alex and Rebecca, and Dan's sister, Sophie. They were such a huge support throughout the whole process and they looked stunning on the day! They wore neutral coloured maxi dresses from Coast.

THE FLOWERS | The flowers were extremely important to our whole theme and we decided to spend a little more in this area that we originally planned. Our florist was Laura Stretten from The Little Flower Studio in Maidstone. We cannot recommend her highly enough. She came to our house to talk through our ideas with us and guided us through the process of choosing our flowers right from the beginning. She knew exactly what we wanted just from outlining our vision for the day and the flowers were absolutely stunning. We first met Laura at the Kent Wedding Show at Detling show ground in Kent. She wasn't pushy at all which we liked, and after meeting with her we knew she would provide that all important personal touch to us. We went for a country garden feel using mainly peonies, roses, gypsophila and other seasonal flowers in an elegant rustic mix of pastel colours. We used gypsophila for button holes and pew ends, and peony and rose petals and daisy heads for the flower girls. After the wedding we had the idea to give our flower centre pieces to people who helped us with things for the day which saved on buying expensive bouquets. We donated the rest of our flowers to Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury so staff could brighten up the patient's wards with them.

THE CAKE | We were very lucky in this area, as one of Charlotte's closest friends, Katy, is very talented at designing and making wedding cakes. We didn't have any input with the cake as it was a wedding gift to us both from Katy. We were extremely grateful, it was a stunning pink velvet sponge with white chocolate icing and decorations, on a traditional three tiers. We chose a shabby chic cake stand to display it, which fitted in beautifully with our theme.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Dan: After extensive research to find a photographer who could capture our day in the style we wanted, we came across Liz from Ruby-Roux photography. When we saw her photos we knew she would be a perfect fit for us. We had everything crossed that she wasn't booked up! After booking her we eventually arranged our engagement shoot which we had at Bignor Park in Sussex. Despite some initial awkwardness on my part, Liz made me feel like there wasn't a camera there. I was totally relaxed and had loads of fun that day. The engagement photos were fantastic and we couldn't have been happier. When the big day finally came around, Liz and her second shooter photographed Charlotte and her bridesmaids getting ready before coming over to where I was to photograph myself and the best men. She had everything covered throughout the whole day, she was never once intrusive and it genuinely felt like we were being photographed by a friend. The finished photographs were more than we could have ever hoped for and our day was perfectly captured with lots of natural shots showing everyone having fun and enjoying the day. She went above and beyond and we are so happy to have such wonderful images which we will treasure forever.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Dan: Most of the décor was sourced from Ebay, Ikea and a few other places. I personally made the save the dates, invitations, order of services, table plan, menu and table names myself. I sourced all of the materials for this on Ebay and over a period of time in my spare time began making them. This saved us quite a lot of money but it was time consuming.

Our centrepieces were kept simple with jam jars and taller vases bought from Ikea which I decorated with lace and twine. Our table runners were bought from Ebay and a family friend stitched lace on to them to give them that a final added touch. The same family friend also made our wedding favours which were small floral fabric hanging hearts for our female guests. We purchased 150 metres of floral bunting too from Ebay to decorate the inside and outside of the venue. We also hired festoon lighting from IA Sound and Light based near Dartford, Kent. We decorated the outside of the venue with this and when darkness arrived in the evening it created a beautiful scene. We used a Paris themed suitcase for our cards.

THE HONEYMOON | We spent 8 nights in our dream destination in a luxury boutique hotel - Aenaon Villas on the Greek island of Santorini. It was paradise and we had an unforgettable time there. It was perfect to be able to relax and reminisce about our special day in such a beautiful location. The sunsets were absolutely spectacular!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The speeches were quite emotional and the feedback was that they were all amazing. There wasn't a dry eye in the house I don't think for all four of them!

Dan: For me, when Charlotte walked down the aisle towards me it felt like a culmination of all our efforts and time together had all lead up to this one moment and I wanted that moment to last forever. I remember thinking how stunningly beautiful she looked and being completely overcome with happiness.

My step dad doing everything he possibly could to make the day run smoothly. I could never repay him for the effort and commitment he gave that day to ensure it all went exactly how I envisioned it to go.

I woke up at 6am on the morning of the wedding and drove over to the reception venue to check everything over and make sure it was all ready to go. I had stayed at one of my best man's house the night before the wedding and left early without waking him up. As I quietly closed his front door I remember thinking that he would think I'd done a runner when he eventually woke up! He did sound slightly worried when he phoned me in the morning!

Charlotte: I will never forget when my Dad arrived at our house before we left for the church and the look on his face when he saw me, it was priceless. He said I looked like a 1920's film star and told me how proud he was of me, a very special moment. He also kept me very calm in the wedding car on the way to the church as I was driving him mad asking what the time was every few minutes even though we had left earlier than scheduled!

Walking down the aisle was the moment it all became so real although very surreal at the same time! I could feel the beaming faces of all the people we loved looking my way with their cameras flashing; you would have thought Beyoncé had just walked in!! But all I wanted to do was get to Dan and as soon as we locked eyes it was very emotional and it was a moment I just wanted to soak up forever. We had made it to our special day and nothing else mattered now because I was finally about to become his wife.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Enjoy every moment leading up to your wedding day and do not let it stress you out! Admittedly, it can be very stressful at times but just always bear in mind that it's your day and the reason you are doing this is to be married at the end. Spend your money on the things that mean the most to you, make as much as you can, make the most of the talents of the people around you - they really won't mind helping and don't be influenced by everyone else's opinions - it's your day!
