Smudged Black Eyeliner-The Sooty Eye is the New Smoky Eye

From Cleopatra to Cara Delevingne, the smoky eye has long been a part of the makeup canon. But even the classics need updating now and then, which is exactly what makeup artist Diana Alba did in our recent fall/winter photo shoot.

Here Makeup.com editor Diana Crisan models a modern take on the smoky eye-we're calling it The Sooty Eye. Continue reading for a *slick* pro tip on how to get this look at home (that was a hint, ICYMI).

GET THE LOOK:

What makes The Sooty Eye different from the classic smoky eye? Its slick, oily appearance. But don't get it twisted-this isn't the glossy eye! The secret to nailing this look is not a clear gloss topper but rather a thin layer of face oil. Follow these steps to get this look at home:

Step 1: Eye Shadow Primer

Start by using an eye shadow primer on your entire lid to prevent your makeup from doing the slip n' slide. We recommend the Eyeshadow Primer Potion by Urban Decay.

Step 2: Cream Eye Shadow

Next apply a powdery-cream eye shadow to your lower lids, using a fluffy brush to diffuse and extend the shadow beyond the crease. We recommend a soft black or slate-hued eye shadow that is water-resistant. We like the Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in Sultry Smoke by L'Oréal Paris.

Step 3: Gel Eyeliner

Then line the entire perimeter of your eye with a lacquered gel eyeliner. We suggest the Infallible 24 HR Lacquer Liner 24 HR in Blackest Black by L'Oréal Paris.

Step 4: Face Oil

Now, here's the clincher. Using your fingertips, dab a thin layer of face oil along your lower lids only. This gives The Sooty Eye its defining feature: That oil slick, tho. For the perfect bit of sheen, we used the Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition Facial Oil by L'Oréal Paris.
