Weekly Wedding Tip: What to Know/ Ask Before Renting a Limousine | MS Bridal Guru

Riding in a limousine can undoubtedly make your wedding day more remarkable. This is one of the contributing factors to the rising number of couples that are deciding to add a limousine to their wedding budgets. Do not hastily rent the first limousine you find, because there are many things to consider before renting a limousine for your big day or special occasion.

1. How long has the company been in business? Look for a limousine business that owns the cars they rent, rather than going through a business that just books the reservations. Find out how long the limo service has been in business. Ensure any limousine business you are considering has a physical address you are able to visit.

2. How many working vehicles does the company currently have on the road? What types are the vehicles, i.e., sedan, van, party bus, limousine, etc. Do not book a limo where your party is at the maximum capacity of passengers. This will cause you and your party to be cramped and uncomfortable during the ride. Think about renting an additional limousine or a limousine that can hold more guests.

3. What is the cleaning fee, if needed? Everyone wants to have a little fun, but sometimes it can go overboard. In the event of any mishaps such as vomiting, do not be afraid to ask if there is a cost associated with the total price or if there is an additional fee.

4. Is there a deposit or cancellation policy? Before you can enjoy your special night, you must first sign the written contract. Most companies require a deposit for your rental, which helps eliminate double bookings. Remember, oral promises not included in the contract are not enforceable, so get everything in writing. Carry a copy of the contract on the day of the event so there are no questions about the terms of the contract. Be sure the contract includes: the services being provided, the details for the day of the event, the terms of payment, and the cancellation policy.

5. For the budget-friendly bride, ask about any current specials and amenities that may be provided.

6. The most important question to ask before renting a limousine: is the company properly insured? Limousine companies must provide properly insured vehicles and licensed drivers so that consumers have rights and protection in case of an accident. Ask if the limousine business has a Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) number for all vehicles that carry 16 or more passengers in order to operate, especially when crossing state lines. You can check the status of a D.O.T. number and the insurance a company carries at: safer.fmsca.dot.gov/companysnapshot.aspx

Use a properly licensed and insured limousine service for several reasons. A licensed company will have the proper insurance, as required by state law, for your safety. They have taken proper steps to run a legitimate company. The vehicles and people at a legitimate company will normally be much nicer than a "fly by night" operator. In the event of a problem, you have real recourse with a licensed company. The unlicensed business is likely to take your money and not show up; the dollars you saved could put you standing on the side of the road with no way to your reception.
