Summer & Robin: The Inspiration.

Summer & Robin: The Inspiration.

via

Hello all you shiny lovely people. I am so overwhelmed to actually be a RMW real bride for 2014-2015. Although a part of me feels like an impostor: you see I'm not a hopeless romantic, we hardly ever do 'date nights', I don't have a folder with clippings of my dream dress and Robin never buys me flowers (not since his uni days anyway when he worked in a corner shop and got the ones on their last legs for super cheap).

Having said that, we are the King and Queen of sarcasm and both have a deep love for anything weird and dorky. Holla to all the David Lynch fanatics in love. Plus Robin can sing the whole of the Men In Black theme word for word, and he understands what I'm saying with my mouth full of cookies. So yeah I've found my match and we have our own ideas about romanticism.

Our engagement story isn't a huge extravaganza. I already wrote all about it here. My ring is called a teensy diamond ring which is pretty self explanatory. I am not a blingy girl, I don't plan to cover anything in diamantes for my wedding day (sorry) and I couldn't love my teensy diamond any more; it's perfect.

You know I said I wasn't romantic? Well I'm not sentimental either. Which is a huge problem when you want to enjoy the process of planning a wedding. I think about what I like, I have a mooch on Pinterest, I decided what I want and that's it. I have to force myself to slow the process down. I reckon I could plan my wedding in a week if I had to.

One way I have forced my wedding planning to slow down is to make and do a lot myself, with the help of friends and family (hellooo all those special people). So far we have our very beautiful venue booked. Plus all the boring, but essential, things like portable toilets and generators and blah blah blah...Oh and I may or may not have purchased a dress off the internet, more about that another day, but I'll leave you with one word - TEMPERLEY.

So why a fiesta? I don't really know. Because we thought it would be fun. Because we wanted to do something different. Just because.

At first we really wanted Jamaican food at the wedding. Robin makes a mean jerk sauce from scratch, the hotter the better. But we quickly realised that if we did that we would have to have tons of alternatives for people who didn't like to blast their faces off with spicy food or Great Grandma Foster might pop her clogs before the first dance. Second choice was Mexican, and we just sort of rolled with the idea. But, and this is important, it's not going to be Mexican themed, just inspired. It ain't no fancy dress wedding!

Food is the fun part of planning the wedding in my opinion. I absolutely can't wait to start talking about food with a caterer. What we really want is simple delicious Mexican street food. Forget silver service, I want my plate piled high and my glass overflowing.

I've also been hand cutting my own personalised papel picado. Papel picado is Mexican bunting made from tissue paper, I'm using pink, green, orange, blue, white and gold. Which as I type it out sounds like a crazy mismatch of colours, but trust me I've seen those colours used together in other fiestas and it's going to look amazing. Also I'm planning to make a some pajaki. Pajaki are traditional Polish paper chandeliers. Made with straw and pieces of coloured scrap paper.

I love folk art and (when the mood takes me) being crafty. I volunteer at the American Museum in Britain, which is the only museum for American decorative arts outside of America. So I have plenty of inspiration while I'm there. This year we have an exhibition curated by Kaffe Fassett, the godfather of colour. Seriously, google it!

How could I not be inspired to have a wonderfully colourful joyous wedding when I get to spend my weekends working surrounded by not only Kaffe's masterpieces but two hundred years worth of American decorative art?! I especially love the scrimshaws. Scrimshaws are engraved whales teeth, usually engraved by sailors. J.F.K loved scrimshaws and had a different piece on his desk in the Oval Office every day of his presidency. Jackie Kennedy had had a special scrimshaw made for her husband as a Christmas gift before he died, which he was buried with. What I'm trying to say is, we already have a toaster so...my wedding list can be a little more creative!

Before I quit trying to secretly teach you bizarre facts about America, I need to introduce you to our son Emmett (yep, like Back To The Future). If you follow me on Instagram you'll mostly see pictures of wedding stuff and him in various states of cuteness. He has just turned three and is very excited about a wedding party happening.

Since he came along I have a bunch of beautiful Mum mates (give it up for Carley who is the reason I'm here. She is obsessive about RMW even though she isn't getting married) and so our wedding will be very child friendly. Until sundown that is, then I will be mostly dancing and drinking with my brand new shiny gorgeous husband...scratch that, I'll mostly be doing that all day.

I'm so excited.

Summer xxx
