Now that we're in December (is anyone else asking themselves how on earth that happened?!), it's time to start thinking about celebrating! This can only mean one thing; sparkle! I hope you have some great Christmas parties, events and dinners to enjoy with friends and family - if that isn't enough to get us in the party mood, there's also New Year's Eve just around the corner! Today's DIY tutorial has been designed with all of these glittering occasions in mind - with the help of the lovely Emma at Freckle Photography, I'll be showing you how to make some really quick and simple DIY festive firework cake toppers. They'll add that extra finishing touch to any cake, cupcake or dessert table, and get your guests feeling fabulously festive...

YOU WILL NEED:METHOD:
  • Scissors
  • Assorted colour foil wraps for sweets, chocolates or cake pops (I got these on ebay.com for around £1)
  • BBQ skewers

Cut your foil pieces into rectangle shapes by removing a strip from the long side. Your finished shape should be approximately twice as long as it is wide.

  1. Fold over along the long edge
  2. On the open side, cut fine snips to fringe all the way along. Leave a section of around 1cm at the middle to keep it together.

  3. Carefully open out again (this is the fiddly part as the foil can rip when not handled delicately.

Fold it inwards repeatedly so you're almost rolling the fringed foil strip all the way to the top. Pinch in the middle section to keep it together.

Gently pull out the fringing all over until you have fluffed up your pom pom. Don't worry if a few pieces break off, you won't be able to tell once it's done.

Being careful not to squash your pom pom too much, wiggle and gently push a skewer up through the middle until it's secure.

Pop them in a cake and head off to the party!
