Quirky Outdoor Farmyard Chic Wedding with Home Grown Flowers

Quirky Outdoor Farmyard Chic Wedding with Home Grown Flowers

via

It is no secret that I utterly love outdoor country weddings and this wedding is a total beauty of a day.

Marie and Tom had an offical ceremony on the 12th August 2014 followed by their gorgeous outdoor stone circle ceremony and party the following day. They wanted to create a wedding which was described as farmyard chic.

They had the prettiest home-grown flowers, home made details and a bake off.

Marie was beautiful in her Justin Alexander lace dress while Tom donned a quirky check waistcoat which looked all kinds of awesome. Smiles all day long.

Thanks so so much to the brilliant Noel Deasington Photography for sharing his photographs today.

THE PROPOSAL | Tom proposed on our sofa in our tiny little flat, the day we found the house of our dreams and decided to buy it. Tom chose my antique engagement ring without me. It is the most beautiful ring I have ever seen and I still catch myself just staring at it when I'm meant to be working!

THE VISION | Farmyard chic. At least, that's what we put on the invitations. Turns out, that's a completely made up term and confused everyone. When I clarified for people, I basically said 'please be comfortable and aware that it's in a field' As a result, some people wore jeans, some people wore wellies, and everyone was relaxed.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | There was no plan; we had eight months.

Turns out, eight months flies by. I got really good at writing lists.

The hardest part was the table plan - 170 guests will do that to you. I planned, designed and made all the stationery myself. I bought my dress in a record 25 minutes, and scared my mum to death when I ordered my shoes from ASOS with a student discount. Tom had his shirt made to measure, along with his waistcoat, which involved rather a lot of planning. We asked Fran to be our celebrant as we completely fell in love with him when we met at Christmas. Based on his suggestions, we wrote up the ceremony with our own vows.

We planned the food with Lizzie at Huntstile Farm, who showed that nothing was too much effort. We didn't intend to have a wedding cake as such, but instead organised a 'bake off'. However, my mum asked the very talented Alice White to 'knock something up' and we had the most beautiful fresh-flower-adorned cake ever, in addition to about 40 other delights (mine was a disaster to say the least and I hid it at the back).

The flowers probably required the most planning as my auntie grew them all. This meant we had to think ahead and hope for the best with the weather. She planted seeds, tucked them up in bed next to her ray burn and meticulously planted them out when they had reached adolescence. She was heard saying 'they should be ready perfectly on time, as long as there's no thunder and lightning'. She didn't bank on hurricane Marie turning up and battering the south coast for the week before the wedding! You have to appreciate the irony though.

BUDGET | We kept the cost down by doing all the stationery ourselves. We also did the flowers which meant that was a lot cheaper. The food was a buffet (mainly due to the numbers) which helped too. I couldn't describe it as a budget wedding, but then 170 guests means you have to just take a deep breath.

THE VENUE | We chose Huntstile Farm as we are both from the town next to Huntstile. We are also in love with the outdoors and really wanted to get married under the sky. The stone circle was the biggest draw to the venue, and proved to be the most memorable part of the day. Lizzie and John were amazing at organising everything. Guests were taken up on the tractor and trailer, my uncle sorted a cider toast at the top and I still haven't found out who organised the sunshine at 1.30, following the grey clouds and sheets of rain in the morning. Back at the farm, the chefs used my family's Greek barbecues to cook the souvla, which filled the air with the most delicious smells. We sampled everyone's cakes and drank pimms. The food was fabulous and we danced until we fell off the sofas.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My dress is a Justin Alexander dress. I found it online, searched for a stockist and bought it in 25 minutes. This was mainly due to the unparalleled service from the ladies at White Lace & Promises in Weston-Super-Mare. It was the first dress I tried on (I loath shopping). I was gently encouraged to try two more by Jacqui and her staff, along with my mum and auntie. They all immediately agreed that it had to be the first one. Each time I went back to try it on, it got more magical and more real.

Thankfully we met Celia, the most talented seamstress I've ever met, who was able to take it in and add loops and poppers for dancing. My hair accessories were from Accessorize (this also panicked my mum, who thought I should be buying something vintage form a market in Portobello road - once again, I loath shopping). My shoe were from Aldo via ASOS (something blue). My bracelet was made by my best friend and I borrowed it from her (something borrowed). Sadly I danced so much it fell off and we couldn't find it. My earrings were my something old - a present from my mum which actually did come from an antique shop.

The wonderful Pat from PH Hair did everyone's hair. We had a great time in the room, sharing pink Prosecco. Kat did make up for me, my mum and my bridesmaid.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Tom got his outfit from Suit Supply in London. I went along a couple of times and came out wanting to wear one myself after meeting their staff. His shirt was made to measure with his watch cuff slightly wider to cover his watch. The attention to detail was incredible. They also paid him lots of compliments for his choice of waistcoat fabric - he is my Gok Wan (did I mention I loath shopping?)

THE READINGS & MUSIC | My little brother did a reading, along with Tom's sister and Dad. They discussed dinosaurs mainly.

Tom's friend Toby played me in on his guitar when I arrived at the stone circle, and it was absolutely beautiful.

In the evening we had Dr Bluegrass and the Illbilly 8 playing their bluegrass tunes. When our first Dance (Eddie Vedder 'Hard Sun) didn't quite work on the IPhone, the band went out, practised it, and then played it for us later!! After the band finished, we popped on the ultimate 80s playlist that we created ourselves.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My gorgeous best friend Gemma was my adult bridesmaid and more 'best lady'. Tom's niece Ella, my cousin's little girl Summer and my goddaughter Kadence were our little ones. Gemma's dress was from Coast and the little ones were from Monsoon and Mammas and Pappas.

THE FLOWERS | My Auntie Vickie did all the flowers with the help of her friend Jane. They were more beautiful than my dreams. When they arrived in buckets I would have been happy to place them straight on the tables. The colours were completely random and utterly full of life. Nothing was uniform and everything was stunning. I couldn't have asked for anything more.

The buttonholes were done by JW Blooms and they matched the 'theme' (I'm not sure there was one) perfectly.

THE CAKE | Despite not intending to have a cake, my mum organised for our family friend Alice White to create a beautiful wedding cake covered in fresh flowers.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Noel Deasington was the poor soul that had to deal with the two least photogenic people on the planet. We chose him after seeing his stunning landscapes and our brief for him included: make us as small as possible, and focus on the surroundings. He did an amazing job. The natural shots are wonderful and even the posing ones haven't made me want to curl up and die. He completely captured the feel of the day. All of my constant smiles, all of the laughs and love.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | My family and friends made all the pom poms. The bunting belonged to Lizzie at the farm. My idea was zero uniformity and no single colour to stand out (I think this was partially lazy). The tables were named after local wildlife and their corresponding collective nouns as I have a small obsession with these: a mischief of mice; a whiteness of swans; a skulk of foxes; a dissimulation of great tits. My uncle cut down some branches from his silver birch to accommodate some succulents (my favourite plant) and burnt our initials into them. We decorated jars of all shapes and sizes with anything I could get my hands on. The favours were also the place names: dinner money envelopes containing forget-me-not seeds, with a design matching the invite. These then had stamped name labels tie on to them. This also tied in with the orders of service and the thank you cards.

THE HONEYMOON | We hiked and rough camped in Yosemite and drank the most amazing wines in Sonoma Valley whilst eating in Michelin starred restaurants.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | I was overwhelmed by how emotional the registry office felt. We really didn't want to make a fuss the day before the ceremony, but it turned out to be the most emotional part. I couldn't stop crying. Although, it meant that the next day I was just so excited and happy. Meeting Tom at the arch filled me with (I've just deleted a number of words in an attempt to describe it - I can't). I won't ever forget walking with him through the stone circle, surrounded by all the people we love the most in the world. The entire ceremony will be something I will treasure in my memory for the rest of my life. Jumping the broom at the end will remain up there though, and we have some great jumping shots in case we're inclined to forget.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Involve friends, family and wine at all stages. Every little job got completed whilst spending time with the people we cared about. This sounds extremely romantic. There were obviously panic attacks, resulting in expert delegation and wondrous support in abundance. I was shocked by how much people wanted to help. I am an utter control freak, but loosening the reigns and letting people help was the best thing I did.
