The Hiawatha Trail is one of those cool, memorable experiences that you simply have to try if you are in the area. This 15-mile stretch of trail features high trestles and long tunnels, as it follows a deserted train route. The best part? It's pretty much all fun, as you are primarily going downhill while soaking in gorgeous panoramic views. A shuttle drops you off at the top of the trail and bike rentals are available (along with a restaurant for a hamburger and beer afterwards).

You can design your exploration of the rugged Sawtooth Mountains however you like. If you are staying in nearby Sun Valley (a very charming resort town), you can easily go for day hikes. However, if you really want to "rough it" for your honeymoon, there is also plenty of adventure available. You can take several looping routes through the mountains with nothing but your backpacks and each other. Traverse trails and experience the quiet of these mountains (as you would expect the farther you hike in, the less people you will encounter).

Right outside of Twin Falls is the majestic Shoshone Falls. Actually higher than the famous Niagara Falls, this part of the Snake River is a great spot to spend a day and have a picnic. Because of its proximity to the city, it is a very relaxed afternoon with an insignificant amount of travel time. While there are several campgrounds in the vicinity, there aren't any places to camp right in the Shoshone Falls recreation area.

The Snake River is also a terrific place to experiment with a little white water rafting. Ranging from day trips to week-long voyages, you can find plenty of tour guide companies to lead you down the rapids. A favorite section of the river is Hells Canyon (although a somewhat foreboding name, right?), where you can witness tons of wildlife and tall rock walls in the deep gorges.

Let's say you love the outdoors, but your honeymoon has to involve a little more luxury than a pup tent and sturdy hiking boots. You may want to head up to northern Idaho and find Lake Pend Oreille. This large lake offers a variety of vacation rentals (including houseboats), day cruises, lodges, and resorts. Enjoy lovely days on the lake and return to all the comforts and indulgences you could ask for.
