When it comes to makeup colors sometimes it’s hard to stray from your comfort zone. Bronze and brown smoky eyes, red lips and perfectly pink cheeks are popular for a reason—they look great on everyone. But even though the classics are classic for a reason, we’re feeling freshly inspired by some new color options trending this fall. From eyeshadow to lipstick, the new kids in town are covering it all, and flattering faces in a major way.

1. Orange

We first fell in love with orange lips this spring, and the playful hue is still holding its ground in our makeup bag for fall. Don’t be scared of its brightness, orange is actually surprisingly flattering on many different skin tones, as long as you choose your product correctly. If you’re trying an orange lip, true orange shades look great on blondes and women with caramel-colored skin or darker, and medium or olive skin looks especially good in corals or reddish oranges. For orange-tinted eyes, stay closer to a sunset, coppery eyeshadow on your lower lid only to add warmth without looking clownish.

2. Burgundy

With red undertones, and just enough gothic appeal to up your cool factor, a wine-stained, burgundy lip is officially our autumn obsession. We like to consider burgundy, dark lipstick for beginners, as it’s only a hint deeper than the red we’ve learned to love. Since there’s less room for error with a bold lip, use a lip brush for the highest level of control, and build the color slowly.

3. Gray

For a softer take on the smoky eye, we love gray eyeshadow this fall. For the most flattering look, stick to a darker, highly pigmented option—it won’t wash you out or make you look too ice-princessish. We like to apply our gray close to the lash line, and complement with smoky black liner—a perfect nighttime look to try this weekend.

4. Deep Purple

Deep purple makes brown eyes richer, greens greener and blues more intense. Incorporate this rich color into your look by swapping out your black liner—or mascara—for a plum option. Keep the rest of your face fairly neutral in terms of color, for the most flattering results.
