I don’t know about you, but when it comes to the holidays I’m one of the biggest advocates. There is nothing like sharing love, happiness and kindness with everyone. We spend a big part of the year working, in school, running from here and there, but rarely take time out to cherish the moment. But that doesn’t have to be the case at least not this year.

During the holiday season we tend to slow things down and reflect a little more. The sense of family and selflessness comes into perspective and that’s simply wonderful. During this time I look for random acts of kindness and discovered this new wave of Secret Santas. The New Zealand Post is playing Santa and using Twitter as their reindeer to drive the #NZSecretSanta effort. We all know how Secret Santa works. Everyone writes their names down on a piece of paper and places it into a hat. Each person then randomly picks a name and purchases a gift for that person. The goal is to not tell the person you selected that you are their Secret Santa. Well using twitter that can be a bit difficult with everyone living in different places. What’s the process to NZ Secret Santa? 1. You sign up to be a Secret Santa 2. Complete registration where you receive someone’s twitter handle 3. Purchase a gift for the twitter handle you received and mail it to New Zealand Post. Bonus: NZ Post will cover the cost of shipping the gift to your secret santa (not much of a secret if you mail it). You dont have to worry about releasing any personal details as the only thing you will receive is that person’s twitter handle. They too will only receive your twitter handle. Some key things to remember if you decide to play…. You dont get a gift if you do not send a gift. Dont be a Scrooge. All of this would not be possible if not for Sam thinking up this awesome idea. In 2010, he created Secret Santa for the Twitter folk of New Zealand. By 2012, it grew larger than his giant pumpkins and Sam needed help. So New Zealand Post stepped in and Sim Sala Bim thousands using this tool.
