Colourful & Quirky Homemade Wedding | Whimsical Wonderland Weddings

David and Laura-Jane knew exactly what they wanted for their September wedding, a day which was all about bringing their loved ones together. They chose to marry at Preston Hall Museum followed by a reception at Wainstones Hotel, North Yorkshire.

They asked their family and friends to help craft their day to perfection, from the bridesmaids felt bouquets to the tea cup candle favours. I so love all of the personal touches, especially the influence of their pets in their wedding details.

There were pretty bridesmaid dresses by Oh My Honey, colourful groomsmen and Llamas. Amazing.

Thanks so much to the fabulous Sally T for sharing her imagery with us today.

The Vision for the Day... To begin with I wanted a low key wedding just me, Dave and a handful of guests. I had dreamt of walking down the aisle in my favourite yellow tea dress holding a bunch of wild flowers. But as you know the day isn't just about the bride, so we began to vision the day together pulling together our strongest ideas, our dreams and hopes. Dave made me see that the wedding isn't just about two people, it's about their loved ones, their family and friends who'll be there throughout their life, and then the handful of guests soon became close family, friends and the church became the museum and grounds we both visited as kids. We found throughout planning we choose the venues as they were intimate, cosy and we both felt we could relax on the day. So the big day evolved throughout the two years of planning, I suppose throughout the planning we did have a theme running, and it was just simply 'us'.

The Planning Process... The big day was created (quite literally) by all our family and friends. The bridesmaids, mums, grandma's and aunties all sewed, cut and pinned felt flowers for what felt like an eternity, we had donations of glass jars from friends and neighbours, the bunting was sewn and donated by my aunty. Every aspect of the wedding was handmade from the order of services, to the confetti cones to the teacup candles which the bridesmaids and I spent an entire Sunday making. The bridesmaid dress (yellow) was made by my mum-in-law (as well as the cake!) and my maid of honour presented me with a beautiful garter she had made too. Dave too was excellent making sure everything was organised and ready for the day.

The Venue... We stumbled upon Preston Hall Museum and Grounds for our ceremony by chance. I was sat on my day off reading the paper when I noticed a small article noting that they now hosted weddings, it was a place I loved visiting as a child and I had fond memories there, this place seemed perfect. I couldn't stop squealing and phoned Dave up at once. And with that we were planning a wedding....

Finding the reception venue proved tricky, most places we looked at were large halls with impressive rooms and grand staircases. Beautiful, yes. But not us. Church halls proved too much to decorate, and function rooms in town weren't intimate enough. We were recommended Wainstones by both my sister in law, Lou and so with that we had a look around. Dave loved it instantly and his huge grin was irresistible! But before we signed on the dotted line we made sure we could have a VIP at the wedding, the day couldn't be complete without llamas...the Wainstones were very relaxed and welcomed our ideas. And with that we had a ceremony and reception booked...we were certainly getting hitched!

From being a little girl I always thought I'd be married in September, its the month my brothers birthday falls in and its always a lovely month for sunshine . When I found out that the 13th of September fell on a Friday in 2013 it felt like that day was made for us! I was born prematurely on February 13th, so 13 has always been a lucky number for me.

Finding the Dress... I didn't want a dress at first. But like the wedding, I was starting to enjoy the wedding planning and my maid of honour Jenny and bridesmaid Laura took me shopping. So I began to look, I knew what I had in mind a simple dress that didn't scream 'bride'. I had a huge list of no's in my head: No fishtail, no figure hugging, no white, no long dress, no strapless, no lace, no princess, no sparkle. Though thankfully I have good friends which made me try on lots of different dress! The dress, when I first saw it I didn't like on the hanger. Strapless. Figure hugging. Lace. NO. But to please my bridesmaids I tried it on....and I didn't think I'd find a dress that was like me. A small train not too long, pretty lace details, a quirky bow, buttons it fit me perfectly. The lady who ran the shop suggested a veil (which I also didn't want) and i soon found myself walking out of a dress shop with a figure hugging lace number, a lace edged veil and sparkly hair piece and I was grinning from ear to ear!

Whilst going the whole hog with the wedding approach I started looking for shoes, and I found myself wistfully admiring a pair of Rachel Simpson shoes, they were very much out of budget and I reminded myself that when we started wedding planning I was the one wanting a low key, low budget wedding and so began to look at alternatives. As a wedding gift my husband bought me the beautiful pair of Rachel Simpson shoes. I was over the moon.

My bridesmaids bought my earrings for on the day, I wore my old pearl bracelet and I had hoped to borrow my grandmas necklace however on the day my dad bought me a beautiful tear drop necklace with my birthstone. I've never been so overwhelmed with thoughtfulness of the day of our wedding!

The Readings + Music... I walked down the aisle to 'part of your world' on the harp. It was a surprise for my dad too, the little mermaid was my favourite film as a little girl. I wasn't expecting to burst into tears though as soon as I heard the music and the doors opened though! I remember, as my last bridesmaid made her entrance my dad whisper to me "whats she playing? I recognise this song..." and me, telling dad and looking at him as a tears welled up in his eyes, and then the doors opened and I faced all our family and friends there for us, for me and Dave and as my eyes made their way up the aisle I saw David, smiling back at me. This was the moment I had dreamed about since I was little and there was my prince, and beside me was my dad. I couldn't stop crying. It was unexpectedly very emotional! No one tells you about the emotions that go through you on that day there overwhelmingly wonderful.

We chose an alpace blessing (which when we first read it thought it said 'alpacha' ), A lovely love story, and a poem I had written Dave when we first met. We also had a hand ceremony and our own vows.

So the dresses stood out we kept the shoes neutral which meant they could wear them again. I made them a pamper hamper as a thank you gift which also held their jewellery for the day.

The Flowers... The flowers...so difficult to choose! Originally I wanted sunflowers as they reminded me of growing sunflowers with my late granddad uncle Horrace and it was a lovely way to remember him on the day too. But trying to keep the costs down we had to look at other alternatives so I looked on online and bought a beautiful felt bouquet, however we weren't happy with the service we received and decided not too use the supplier again. With my sewing ability and with Dave's talent to shape florists wire we created the bridesmaids bouquets ourselves.

The table names were all illustrated by myself and featured all our pets, we really wanted to include them all in the day and it made a lovely personal touch. We had a hard time deciding on the table centrepieces!! We had drawn up lots of different options, from bird houses to fish bowels, but we wanted something that could be reused after the wedding. In the end we decided on felt topiary trees as they were in keeping with the bouquets; after the wedding we dismantled the trees and reused the flowers to make a quilt and cushion covers from.

We choose to keep the ceremony room simple and classic, using a aisle runner, candles and red rose petals to compliment the décor, and keep the focus on the vows. We can't recommend live music enough! The save the dates and invites were illustrated by myself and made fabulous by my bridesmaid Laura who is a graphic designer .

Memorable Moments... The car journey from the ceremony to reception was one of the highlights of our day it was the only time we got with just ourselves, no other guests or cameras! Really wonderful. Driving into the reception venue car park to see two furry guests all dressed up for the occasion. I was ecstatic! Llama cuddles. All our guests joining us for the first dance.
