Cold, brisk air might be conducive to cuddling, but when it comes to puckering up those winter lips for a kiss, you might want to reconsider. After all, it's no secret that this time of year can bring about dry, chapped lips - thanks, freezing temps. Not ones to suffer the fate of dry lips without a fight, today we're sharing four remedies to soothe, moisturize and heal your pucker - smooch away!

Exfoliate - gently

To combat peeling, exfoliate your lips with a gentle DIY scrub made with brown sugar and coconut oil; the sugar will slough off flaky skin while the coconut oil conditions. Just make sure to rub the mixture over your lips gently and follow up with a balm immediately afterwards to avoid stripping your lips of natural lipids.

Stop licking your lips

We know, we know - so much easier said than done. When your lips feel start feeling dry, your natural impulse is to lick them - water equals hydration, right? Wrong. Licking your lips will actually make them drier; saliva evaporates and leaves your lips worse off than they were before. Plus, it contains acids that help break down food - bad news for the already-sensitive skin on your lips.

Moisturize while you sleep

It's no secret that we're huge fans of overnight beauty remedies. Prep before bed and wake up "Sleeping Beauty" gorgeous? Sounds like the perfect plan. Moisturize your parched pucker with a hydrating balm before you snooze - the ingredients will be able to soak in while you sleep and you'll wake up with softer, smoother lips.

Look for the right ingredients

Every lip balm out there promises to hydrate and protect - but not all of them actually do. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, lanolin and squalane for a big dose of moisture (we always count on to protect and relieve our chapped lips). Prefer natural products? Shea butter, castor seed oil and sunflower seed oil are all your friends. Here's more about what to look for in a great lip balm.
