From Rochelle: "Anna from In the Mood For Love derived the inspiration for this romantic seaside photo session from local mythology. Shot in the tiny fisherman's village of San Vito, Puglia, located in southern Italy, the images celebrate a culture rich in legend. Beautiful model Silvia Siliberti is our mermaid, stranded on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea when she is tragically caught in the nets of a local fisherman and forced to marry the man she does not love. She is ultimately freed by the divinities and released back to her home in the sea. Anna and I hoped to tell the mermaid's story through impactful images set against the background of the scenic beach. Personally speaking, it was important for me to capture the unique details of the carefully styled shoot. Anna, who prior to wedding planning worked in the fashion industry, pulled pieces from her own collection to complement the shoot. The first dress modeled by Siliberti is reminiscent of mermaid scales shining in the reflection of the sun and sea. Her belt was handmade by an iron craftsman, and represents constriction to an earthly life. The second dress symbolizes the lightness of freedom when, once released from her clothes, the mermaid returns to the sea. I chose to shoot her story in film, a medium I love for its organic feel and true-to-nature color. My passion for film goes back quite some time- I fondly remember making my own pinhole camera with shoe boxes and then developing the film in dark rooms during my time at the Corcoran school of Art in Washington DC. In selecting film, I chose to return to the roots of the photographic experience and celebrate the revival of a nearly lost art."
