Fun Festival Big Top 'Kiki Fest' Wedding - Whimsical...

via

WWW readers Kate and David tied the knot on the 23rd August 2014. They decided on a festival style wedding having met at Glastonbury. How perfect?

With the beautiful outdoor setting of Riverside Weddings in Oxfordshire they hired an amazing big top. Deciding on festival signs and ice cream they kept their décor simple, focusing on the fun moments instead.

Kate looked beautiful in her lace tea length dress while David donned a navy suit. The bridesmaids were so very pretty too, in mismatched grey frocks teamed with lush white blooms. Wow.

Thanks so much today to Jen Marino for sharing her amazing images with us.

THE PROPOSAL | After 7 years together, Dave proposed to me whilst we were away in Lisbon for a long weekend. I was so surprised that he had to ask me twice!

THE VISION | We met at Glastonbury, so we knew we wanted a festival style wedding. We didn't want anything too formal or traditional, we just wanted it to be good fun.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | I work in market research so of course I couldn't help myself but had to 1. Run a questionnaire for us both to help narrow down what was important to us and then 2. Create a powerpoint slideshow that showed different venue options and combinations that I had researched, then together we decided on the venues. We knew we wanted something festival style and worked out there were 3 ways of doing it: 1. Find one venue where we could do it all e.g. get married and have festival reception or 2. Have a town hall ceremony and then off to a field for our festival style reception or 3. Do it all in a barn.

Through scouring the internet, option 2 ended up being the winner - town hall reception and then festival fun after. Then the next big thing was securing a Big Top (festival style), everything to go inside it and a caterer!

THE VENUE | Ceremony at Abingdon Guildhall, Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Reception: Newbridge Farm, Standlake, Oxfordshire

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I had my dress made. Accessories - shoes from LK Bennett - Pink and Silver glitter as soon as I saw them I knew - they were perfect! Earrings that Dave had bought me as his first birthday present for me. Hair accessory - bought from Pure Couture Bridal shop in Beaconsfield.

FINDING THE DRESS | I knew that I wanted a short dress, I had never pictured myself in a traditional long dress, I never wear long dresses, plus a long dress being dragged through a field didn't sound like fun! I went to one 'traditional' wedding dress shop with the intention of absolutely ruling out a long dress and in the hope they would have some short dresses. The dresses were amazing, I felt like a movie star but they just didn't feel right, they were not how I pictured myself. I then went onto a specialist retailer in short dresses. The service was amazing, she inspired me to go for a blush dress as Dave was wearing Navy, but price was outside of my budget sadly. Also, for my mum and sister to see me in a short dress, now they realised why I was so keen to have a short dress.

So I started to look online for a dress designer, who could create exactly what I wanted. I found quite few dressmakers online and their prices really varied but key is to find out if they are actually making it or getting it sent across from China (as there are many a horror stories). I was able to pick the lace I wanted and the fabrics. My dress ended up absolutely perfect for the big day but I did have a bit of a nightmare with it being turning up and it being way too big across the shoulders!! When I asked her to fix it, she told me she would give me a £40 refund and to take it to a local dressmaker to fix, it was way more than £40 worth of changes! I was not impressed and after many an email, she agreed to fix it for free. When it came back, it was still too big!! This time she told me to take it to a local dressmaker and she would cover the costs. My dress was finished one week before the big day - phew!

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Dave and I both are not fans of traditional wedding suits - tops and tails, so wanted a great 3 piece suit for the big day. We went with a navy blue suit from M&S.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | No readings, we just wanted to keep it simple.

Music - Walked down aisle to: Stand by Me - Ben E King. Signing Register: Signed Sealed Delivered - Stevie Wonder, You're the best thing - Style Council, The Cure - Close to me. Walking out: Nothings Gonna Stop us now - Starship.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Jemima, Sandra and Hayley - all wore dove grey dresses but in different styles as I wanted them to wear a dress that flattered them individually. Dresses were from Coast and Monsoon.

THE FLOWERS | I knew that I wanted Peonies, Roses and Hydrangeas but unfortunately Peonies were out of season for August so I bought some silk peonies and mixed them with real Roses and real Hydrangeas. No one could tell the peonies weren't real and now I have the peonies living on in our house. Our amazing talented friend, Charlotte, put the bouquets and button holes together for us on the morning of the wedding at the hotel that I was staying in.

THE CAKE | Cakes are so expensive from a wedding cake shop, my mum had offered but logistically it would have been a nightmare as she would have had to travel the cake up in the back of her car and somehow get the cake from her hotel room to the venue the morning of the wedding and put it together (15mins away) when she needed to be getting ready. So we went with trusty Marks and Spencer and it was delicious! We had a chocolate cake with ivory icing. We both hate fruit cake!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | At first Dave didn't want to have a photographer as he absolutely hates having his picture taken. We thought about maybe asking a friend to take photos but then realised it's a bit unfair on them as they cannot relax. We knew that we didn't want any formal, cheesy photos so started to look into options that could cover the area and within our budget. As soon as we saw Jen's photos we knew that we really wanted to Jen to capture our wedding. When we met Jen, we couldn't believe how young she was vs. how amazing her portfolio is! We had a trial run/engagement shoot and that really helped us get clear on the shots we would want for the big day, where we would want the photos taken and of course helped us get to know Jen.

On the day, Jen was amazing. She captured photos of me and the girls getting ready, the boys and guests at the pub, the ceremony and then onto the reception. Jen really blended into the day, we did not feel pushed around or barked at (as I have witnessed at other weddings!). Jen captured all the key moments and really captured the fun and emotion of the day. She was absolutely brilliant. We love all our photos, its hard to choose which ones to frame!

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | As our wedding was festival style, our invites were festival ticket, we posted them with a fake invoice cover letter and official looking envelopes, the tickets even had a tear off section for the RSVP. They were obviously very realistic as some people were confused as to what festival they had bought tickets for! We had a matching festival themed website with all the additional information for the schedule for the day and where to stay etc. On the day, we handed out festival lanyards with the order of service etc. to our guests and we had a large table plan that looked like a festival line-up poster.

Festival style so stripped back. Round tables with white linen. It was all about the festival so the money went on what was important to us; the big top, the atmosphere and the free bar!

Bizarrely the owner of the big top that we hired, was actually at Glastonbury running the Chapel of Love, the year we first met at Glastonbury, back in 2007! At the Chapel of Love there were 2 Grotesques, and he surprised us and brought them to the wedding. Plus the Grotesques actually used to be on Brighton Pier and I am originally from down that way. Small world.

THE HONEYMOON | Lake Garda for a week with a bigger trip planned for the year after.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | The moment that Dave announced the Silent Disco and the massive scream of excitement!

When Dave jumped behind the bar to serve our guests when the bar first opened.

Standing outside the big top and looking back in at all our friends and family all together having a great time at our wedding - job done.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Get a spreadsheet with a budget for things sorted quickly to work out how much it will cost!

Don't try to scrimp and save on things that are going to mean more work on the day for you.

Don't worry about other people's opinions and what they would want, focus on what you as a couple want.
