Elegant North Carolina Wedding

Elegant North Carolina Wedding

Libby and Whit's North Carolina wedding exuded Southern hospitality and elegance through and through. We love the bride's stunning white bouquet, the couple's backyard ceremony, and the crazy-fun dance party at the reception - but best of all, we love this wedding's timeless appeal. If you have a weakness for toile wallpaper and classic calligraphy, you'll want to pace yourself!

"The best advice I received as a bride was to make a conscious effort to take mental 'snap shots' of the day. I still remember exactly what my bedroom looked like when I woke up the day of our wedding, and each memory is precious to me."

Was there anyone who played a special role in planning your wedding? My mother was a rockstar. She had just planned my older sister's wedding, our family's first wedding, six months before mine, and she had as much enthusiasm for our celebration as she did for Virginia's - I'm still in awe of her energy and grace.

What advice do you have for other couples in the midst of planning a wedding? Start your thank you notes early.

If you had it to do over again, is there anything you would do differently? Go to the facial your mom booked. And don't try to bake a pie for your in-laws one day before the wedding in the venue's kitchen.

Did you have something borrowed and something new? I paired my mother's vintage veil with a modern Le Spose di Gio strapless gown.

The Ceremony

"We were married at our home in Cashiers, NC. I spent my summers at Camp Merrie-Woode with my sisters, and Whit's family is from nearby Atlanta, so Cashiers is a beloved vacation spot for both of us. Cashiers' proximity to Atlanta and Birmingham made it an easy destination for both families."

Your ceremony in three words. Comfortable, Peaceful, Charming.

Who officiated your ceremony? Dr. Conrad Sharps, pastor of Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, AL and Libby's family pastor.

What were your ceremony readings? Jeremiah 17:7-8 and Romans 11: 33,36

What were your vows like? We exchanged traditional wedding vows during the ceremony, and wrote letters to one another with our personal vows.

What was the most memorable moment of your ceremony? We took a big chance on the weather by holding our June wedding outdoors in the unpredictable North Carolina mountains. However, it was my opinion that if we were to be married in Cashiers, the ceremony simply had to be outside. We were married in our backyard, before the gray face of Whiteside Mountain. We've spent three years trying to get used to that view, yet it remains stunning and majestic. In the moment of the Declaration of Marriage, the sun suddenly poured gold over us and across Whiteside's bare, open face. If I have ever felt the presence of God, it was then.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding ceremony? Everything- it was such a lovely day. The music was beautiful and set a peaceful, joyous tone. I have the clearest memory of saying our vows to one another in the supportive and loving presence of our friends and family.

The Reception

"We built a reception site in the middle of an empty field at our club, Mountaintop Golf & Lake Club. It was away from the other guest homes, so we could be as loud as we wanted, and there was lots of space to dance and eat. We were completely in awe of the tent - it was so comfortable, and it even had a sunken dance floor!"

What type of cake or dessert did you serve? We had a brown butter pound cake with buttercream frosting, and served a tower of Krispy Kreme donuts in honor of Whit's favorite food.

How would you describe your reception? It was the most fun dance party, ever.

What was your first dance song? " You Make Me Feel Like Dancing " by Leo Sayer.

Please tell us about any other special details or moments from your reception. Our props were so much fun. We had Star Wars themed masks, tennis headbands, and sparkly gold hats.

What inspired you when you were planning your wedding? The mountains and the music. Our band, Big Swing and the Ballroom Blasters, was incredible.

What was your favorite moment or part of the reception? Changing into my short dress and dancing in a Chewbacca mask.
