Let's talk frankly about cake toppers, shall we? For modern couples it can be difficult to find a cake topper that isn't either totally boring or just plain crazy. Seriously, do we really have to show a bride figurine dragging off her unsuspecting groom into matrimonial prison one more time? Really?

Instead, we've found some truly lovely toppers from fun to pretty to witty that would fit right in at any modern wedding. Above, these paper doll inspired toppers show a couple holding flags from their respective countries (when I saw this one I couldn't help but think of all the international couples I know getting married in "mid-way" destination weddings, in between their two home countries).

Banners, flags, and garland are all popular wedding decor details right now. Why not use the same concept for your cake topper? We love this jaunty illustrated banner (above, left) set off with pretty flowers. And this high cutout flag (above, right) with its floral pattern would work well with any traditional buttercream cake. But when it comes to delivering an endless supply of pep, nothing beats bright garland (below). Nothing.

If you are having a formal, elegant wedding you may want something with a bit more glam. We love this crown topper surrounded by blueberries and ranunculus on this stately wedding cake below.

Some modern wedding themes have a definite "outdoors-in" vibe. Whether Southwestern affairs laden with cacti or Northwest weddings big on greenery, these decor touches can easily be designed to work on top of your cake. Below (left), this heart-shaped prickly pair is an unexpectedly sweet touch. And golden deer (or any other animal figurines) are so cool right now. Use them with greenery or herbs to create a beautiful topper.

Of course, for the ultimate "natural" effect, you just need something green. The top layer of this cake below was coated in a golden hue and then the baker dipped the tips of the air plant's leaves in the same coating. Amazing!
