How to Build a Makeup Kit That's Fit for a Makeup Artist

via

In our heart of hearts we all want to be makeup artists. I mean look at them. They all are cosmetic wizards in their own right, always look fabulous even when running on a few hours of sleep and always know about the latest and greatest tools and products. For this reason, we decided to get their advice on a very important topic in every girl's life: makeup kits. With so many products and colors out there, it's hard to know which items to make your staples and which to buy for kicks once in a while. We asked two of our fave makeup artists how to build the best makeup kit for the everyday girl!

Face

Professional makeup artists build their kits in such a way that they're prepared for any and all situations. This is especially true for face makeup. Keep your collection stocked with the staple face products you can use on a daily basis no matter the weather or occasion. That being said, foundation is the most important item in your kit. New York-based makeup artist Ashley Rebecca says Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is her go-to formula because, "It makes your skin look flawless and holds up well through red carpet events and photo shoots." Along with foundation, a concealer, under-eye concealer, blush and bronzer are the items you should keep handy for everyday makeup. And make sure you do your due diligence to ensure each of these items match or complement your skin tone. Not sure what your skin tone is? Read this.

You can still be prepared for more dramatic looks by keeping an item or two handy that will deliver them in a jiffy. Gabriel Almodovar, celebrity makeup artist for Maybelline New York, keeps a highlighter on hand for those times you want to add a little shimmer and sparkle to your makeup. And, you never know when an occasion will call for an extra-chiseled and defined complexion, so a contouring stick is good to keep on hand as well. And, even the most talented makeup artist makes mistakes, so invest in some cleansing towelettes for those days you can't seem to get your cat eye right.

Eyes

In a perfect world, we would have eye shadows in every shade of the rainbow. But, unfortunately, we just don't have the counter (or wallet space) to house such a collection. That doesn't mean you can't have a great stash of shadows at the ready. Keep one or two solid palettes in stock that will allow you some versatility and a range of look options. Rebecca keeps Urban Decay Naked eye shadow palettes in her possession at all times. "They allow such a great variety of shades," she raves. "I have all the palettes and use them every day. Just one is enough for multiple looks." In addition to the neutrals offered in the naked palettes, the brand's new Naked Smoky palette is also good to invest in, as a smoky eye (in all levels of intensity) is always in style.

Now that we have shadows out of the way, let's address the rest of the eye region. Almodovar keeps his kit stocked with waterproof and regular mascara (Maybelline mascaras are his favorites) as well as a few eyeliners (black and brown) and an eyelash curler. And, let's not forget the feature that acts as the frame for the eyes: your eyebrows. We would never want you to leave the house with less-than-perfect brows, so find the powder, gel and/or pencil that works for you and keep it in stock at all times.

Lips

Lipstick trends are probably one of the most unpredictable and ever-changing in the makeup world. It seems every season there's a new color or texture that's all the rage. It's impossible to keep up with it and keep those trendy shades on hand at all times. Our advice, and the advice of our fave makeup artists, is to switch out your lip shades each season based on the colors you love best, but keep a few classic hues as constant residents in your makeup kit. For example, nude, peach and red are great to have on hand as they are always on trend and work with a variety of of occasions. Take the same approach with your lip liners. Keep two or three shades (and an invisible liner while you're at it) that match up with your staple lipstick. Almodovar also keeps a good lip gloss in his kit, as they're great for those days you want simple and fresh makeup look with a touch of color and shine.

Healthy, hydrated lips are the key to flawless lip color and application, so keep them hydrated with a lip slave and tinted lip balm. There's nothing worse than chapped, dry lips!
