Eclectic & DIY Park Handfasting Wedding - Whimsical Wonderland...

Planning a wedding from overseas is never the easiest of tasks, but today's couple totally nailed it.

WWW readers Cristin and Joe held their handfasting ceremony in a park on the 27th June, followed by a reception at Birnam Hotel in Scotland. They crafted up a storm, with all the lovely little touches hand made alongside the cake and flowers which were created by Aunties.

There was a colour popping navy and yellow colour scheme with happy roses, sweet maids and kilts all round. Cristin looked very elegant in her romantic gown and plaited hair style. Just so lovely.

Thanks goes to the wonderful Anna Urban for providing the photographs today.

THE PROPOSAL | Joe and I took his parents to Paris in December of 2013. Before leaving (we live in the states now. Joe is from Southampton, England where his parents still live) I made a list of things I wanted to be sure to do and see since it would be my first visit to Paris. One of the things I really wanted to see was the Ponts des Arts Bridge...Love Lock Bridge. Once we arrived in Paris I was so in awe I forgot the things I wanted to do until we passed people on the street who were selling locks. I quickly remembered my list and wanted to buy a lock. Joe asked me to wait until closer to the bridge to get my lock. I waited and we kept walking closer. I thought we were close enough and really wanted to buy a lock! Joe talked me into walking closer still. I was getting really bothered since I wanted a lock and then Joe pulled out a lock he had inscribed with our initials he had brought with him from home. He and got down on one knee, I said yes, and we added our lock to the bridge!

THE VISION | The vision was personal, eclectic, DIY. We wanted an experience that would show off Scotland to our guest but still be very personalised. We decided on a handfasting ceremony in a local park followed by dinner and a ceilidh. We wanted something really relaxed but still impressive enough to match everyone's expectations and amount of time they spent travelling to the location.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | This was a bit tricky. Everything had to be researched and planned via the internet. I also needed a ceremony spot, reception area, and place where our guests could all stay for multiple days that didn't require them to have transportation. I researched like crazy and found some options. Yet, being far away had some major disadvantages so I contacted and hired Janice at Blue Thistle Events. Janice supplied me with more information than I ever imaged for every question I had and ultimately found our ceremony, reception, and accommodation location. Janice also set up our ceremony spot on the day of the wedding, which relieved a large amount of stress.

THE VENUE | The ceremony was held in a public park along the River Tay in Dunkeld, Scotland. It was a beautiful green space with panoramic views. The guest then walked with a piper to the Birnam Hotel. The hotel was beyond accommodating with a great staff and had a beautiful hall and great food.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | The dress was something comfortable and light so that I could walk from the Birnam Hotel along the river to the ceremony spot. I wore a fresh water pearl necklace and earrings and tartan wedges from Ness. Following the cocktail hour I changed into a short white party dress, purple and teal fascinator, and dazzling earrings and a bracelet I had found the previous year with friends.

FINDING THE DRESS | Finding the dress was a quick and simple process for me. I went to David's Bridal in Virginia with a list of dresses I wanted to try on and left with the one which I knew would be my favourite. The dress was the last one they had in the store and was even in the correct size!

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Joe rented his kilt from A1 Kilt Hire.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | The bridesmaids wore simple dark teal dresses from Modcloth. They also had tartan shoes from Ness.

THE FLOWERS | Joe's aunt made our bouquets. I simply told her what colours I wanted and she took it from there! I loved the flowers. Joe's mother made the button holes.

THE CAKE | Another of Joe's aunts made our cake. She made it in Devon, England and drove it the whole way up to Dunkeld, Scotland. It was perfect!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | The amazing Anna Urban did our photos! I really wanted a documentary style photographer and Anna delivered more than expected.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | I made all the details and decorations that I could and brought them over with me in our checked luggage on the plane. I created a top table decoration made from left overs of ribbons. These were all left overs from events I did for other people such as my sisters baby shower and best friends bridal shower. At the ceremony we had cut outs of various shapes to mark our spot in the park. These shapes were all meaningful to who Joe and I are. I made the seating chart, place cards, personalised badges, tags for well wishes, and used funny pictures of Joe and I as much as possible.

THE HONEYMOON | Following the wedding we stayed in Scotland for a few days and showed my family around the countryside and Edinburgh. We then went to the London and when my family left Joe and I continued on to Rome for two days. After rushing around Rome, we visited Athens and then slowed down in Santorini and Paros, Greece.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Our ceilidh band! It was so much fun! No one had any idea how to do the dances but the band was patient with us and modelled each step until we all caught on. It was lively and experience everyone will remember.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Be you! Our wedding was quirky and personal but each detail meant so much to us and our guest saw the meaning in each piece.
