Natural Woodland Inspired DIY Rustic Wedding - Whimsical...

Lorna took to Pinterest to begin the wedding planning following a super romantic proposal. After discounting a vintage tea theme, she fell for the idea of a woodland feel wedding day.

Lorna and Nicholas were married on Thursday 9 th April 2015 after finding out they were expecting a baby and bringing their date forward by 4 months. With a budget of £7000 they took to hand crafting their day alongside their bridesmaids and family. The result? A gorgeous rustic array of décor and sweet blooms, which looked so very lovely.

There were maids in pale lilac gowns, gents in mismatched suits and an utterly elegant bride.

Many thanks goes to Samantha Ward for providing the simply gorgeous images this afternoon.

THE PROPOSAL | I remember it like it was yesterday, one of the more memorable moments of our relationship (as I suppose it should be). I had just arrived in London Heathrow Airport from a month long teaching expedition in India. I had missed Nicholas so much and could tell the feeling was mutual as he welcomed me at the airport with a huge bouquet of flowers (doesn't happen very often, "they're not practical"). Nicky had planned a picnic for before our journey home to Bradford. He had found a park not so far away which sounded beautiful, the only problem, on his way down to Heathrow he had experienced a blowout on the motorway so we had to make a short stop to get a new tyre fitted before making way for the park. Three hours later with four working tyres and a rather stressed out Nicholas we arrived at the park. I had suggested we forget about the picnic and just drive home, little did I know his big plan. It was a warm day and the air was thick with pollen. We set up camp under a beautiful tree in the long, swaying grass. It was very secluded and to be honest completely perfect for a proposal. He suggested I open the basket; I did so carefully to find a beautiful pink rose and a ring box hidden inside. I wasn't sure what to make of it at first. I was a little taken aback. I hadn't ever expected he would ask, although I had left hints now and again. I so wanted to just say yes and make my own 'life changing' decision but for some reason it just came out, "I want to say yes but what will my Nan think?" A startled look drew upon Nicky's face as he replied "well I told your brother and he was happy about it." To which I replied, "oh well yes then!" The following 10 minutes were celebrated by tucking into champagne yogurts (we had a long drive back to Bradford ahead) and specially made sandwiches until I broke out into a huge rash from the extreme content of pollen blowing over us and Nicky's eyes began to stream and itch. We decided it may be time to pack up and continue our celebrations in the comfort of our pollen filtered car on the motorway. Like I say a very memorable day, for more reasons than one, but for me the perfect proposal with a little added humour.

THE VISION | We knew from the start we didn't want an over the top, blind you with the bling wedding, but that's all we really know. Nicky left me to do the majority of the planning but got involved with the venue. I wanted the wedding to be as natural as possible and for the theme to reflect nature as much as possible. I toyed with the idea of a vintage tea wedding but, after hours of scouring Pinterest for wedding theme ideas, fell in love with the idea of a woodland wedding. I went through and saved thousands of pictures of wedding décor, invitations and other wedding essentials and began collecting the materials the maids and myself would need to begin to make them.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | In all honesty, once the venue was booked, I don't feel there was a great deal of effort put into planning. I started an ideas scrap book, but never finished it. I had planned on beginning to make everything i.e. invitations, decorations, wedding favours and the table plan around Easter 2015. However, in February 2015 Nicholas and I found out I was a month pregnant. Everything had to change... and it had to change quickly. Luckily the venue and photographer were extremely flexible and allowed us to change the date of our wedding from the 14 th August 2015 to the 9 th April 2015. Fortunately we had the finances to afford the wedding at this time but we knew the honeymoon would now go on hold (our dreams of Bali may now become more realistic nearer retirement). From this point on everything had to be planned in a rather short space of time, we managed it though.

BUDGET | Our budget was to, preferably, be lower than £7,000. This seemed a bit unrealistic at first but after researching we found it would be achievable.

THE VENUE | Monk Fryston Hall Hotel, a beautiful hall turned hotel, the history of which dates back to the 12 th Century. The hotel has been kept classic looking, some rooms have been/are being renovated however in April the larger majority were very basic. We chose the venue more because of its beautiful grounds. The greenery and foliage have been kept to a high standard. There are some amazing features to the grounds, a huge, working water fountain and an arched wooden bridge, which have been kept to look rustic.

THE FLOWERS | Diane Joyce (Groom's auntie) arranged all the flowers. The flowers I bought the day before from a variety of stores including, surprisingly, Morrison's and a local farm shop, due to a mishap with the original suppliers.

THE CAKE | Marias Cakes. We wanted the cake to be as simple looking as possible but also as delicious as possible. Our cake had three tiers each of a different flavour, from top to bottom, rose, Lemon and finally Victoria sponge. The cake was enrobed in a white chocolate ganache and encased in vanilla butter cream icing.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | Samantha Ward. Not only is she an amazing photographer who managed to capture every element of our special day, she was also a true delight to have at the wedding. All of our guests commented on how lovely she was and how naturally she fit into the wedding.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Pillar candles and stands were provided by Mark Jones (Bride's uncle). Chairs by Event Furniture.

All other décor made and arranged by bridesmaids, bride, and a few other family members.

THE HONEYMOON | Our honeymoon will start on the 22 nd September when our baby is due, we're super excited for his arrival. Maybe we will get chance for a small family get away in 2016.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | I feel there are perhaps too many memorable moments to include here but here are just a few;

Nearly falling down the stairs on the way to the altar.

The tears and laughter in response to both the best men's and father of the bride speeches.

Father of the bride singing to us just after our first dance.

Best man misplacing the rings.

The bridesmaids and bride eating sour berries and taking pictures of their sour faces the morning before the wedding.

Nicholas' awkwardness during the bride and grooms photo shoot.

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Enjoy every minute of your day and do not stress the small things it will all work out in the end. It really is the best day of your life so just enjoy and do it how you want to do it.
