The Do's and Don'ts of Waterproof Makeup

The Do's and Don'ts of Waterproof Makeup

With the amount of time we spend doing our makeup (and the $$$ spent), we take great effort in making sure it's strong enough to survive any situation. No thunderstorm, humid summer day, rowdy pool party or heartbreaking romantic movie can smudge our water-resistant mascara. Nice try, Mother Nature! But, before you hit up the makeup aisle and reach for everything labeled "waterproof," you should know a few things first:

DO: Use an Oil-Free Moisturizer

To ensure that even the sturdiest of waterproof makeup stays put, be sure to slather on an oil-free moisturizer first. This will help prevent your foundation from feeling (and looking) slick and streaky. Opt for a lightweight lotion like Kiehl's Ultra Facial Oil-Free Lotion instead. Just let it absorb for a few minutes before reaching for that makeup!

DON'T: Forget to Use Primer

Because some waterproof products can be heavy and drying, applying a primer will not only prep your face for longer wear, but it will also act as a barrier for your skin and keep it hydrated. To avoid layering on too many products, you can use an all-in-one multitasking formula like Urban Decay Naked Skin Bronzing Beauty Balm before your foundation.

DO: Consider the Formula If You Have Sensitive Eyes

If you wear contacts or have general sensitivities to eye makeup, waterproof mascara or eye shadow may not be right for you. If you decide to give it a test run, invest in an ultra-gentle makeup remover, so as not to irritate your eyes.

DON'T: Use Waterproof Makeup Everyday

While we love the idea of our makeup staying in place (even through a tidal wave), there's no reason to wear waterproof makeup on the daily. Because these formulas don't typically contain conditioning ingredients, reserve them for occasions such as beach days or weddings (if you know you're prone to crying!).

DON'T: Rely on Regular Methods of Removal

Waterproof formulas are pretty much infamous for being stubborn to remove. So, your go-to towelette for regular eye makeup or your daily cleanser may not work when you're trying to swipe it all off at the end of the day. Luckily, the beauty industry heard our cries for help and formulated makeup removers that are powerful enough to break down water-resistant products without the hassle or irritation! We've got a few products picks for you right here.
