We have such a fun Brooklyn wedding to share with you all today! After 11 years together, Sara + Travis wanted to ditch all the typical traditions + just throw a kick ass party that reflected who they are and what they’re all about! While their event design was influenced by the rustic, vintage feel of the venue, they were also deeply inspired by their love of music, and they incorporated this element wherever they could. The venue itself is a music venue, records served as their guest book, their “flower girl” carried a wand made of sheet music, and even the cake had music detailing! We are both New Yorkers, but I was born and raised in New York City, so having a real NYC feel was crucial. Everyone thought I was nuts when I went outside in my wedding dress to hail a cab, but that’s what New Yorkers do! We took pictures in our “backyard” (Prospect Park) and had the City’s top food trucks feed our guests. From there we made decisions based on what we wanted and incorporated tradition where it felt right, and broke away from it where it felt forced. Every aspect of the wedding reflected us, from the cocktail-style reception, to the food choices, and of course the wedding cake in the shape of our dog, Piko! We thought through every detail, but also didn’t get caught up in etiquette or tradition or what people would think/say. I can’t even tell you how many times people second-guessed some of our ideas, but we never caved and the result was a wedding that completely reflected the two of us and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome!

How many of you are having food trucks at your wedding?! Always such an awesome idea!

For me, the most memorable moment was when my best friend/maid of honor performed my favorite song and then surprised me by switching from that into my mom’s favorite song. Travis, my dad and I all got on stage with her and sang together. It was the best way to make my deceased mom a part of the day without making the whole mood of the day somber. It was perfect!

Another great memory was at the very end of the night when Travis and I privately lit a wish lantern outside the venue. It was such a nice moment for us to be alone in the dark and looking toward our future after the craziness of the day.

The best advice I can give is not to get caught up in the wedding “rules.” Do whatever you want! It’s your day and it will be so much more memorable if it reflects the two of you. You should each pick a couple of things that are most important to you and make sure you don’t compromise on those things. Don’t lose sight of what this is all about – and have fun!
