Colourful Crafty Cath Kidston Inspired Wedding

I know I say it time and time again, but you guys are amazing! I just love a WWW reader wedding and today's is just a cracker.

WWW readers Karen and Adam tied the knot on the 31st May 2014, holding their reception at The Sussex Barn. They had a Church ceremony where their sweet little boy danced in the aisle, Cath Kidston inspired crafty décor, colourful blooms and lovely seaside portraits.

Karen wore a pretty Justin Alexander dress with bargain Primark heels while Adam donned a bow tie and blue suit combo. Gorgeous.

Thanks so very much to FitzGerald Photographic for sharing their wonderful images.

THE PROPOSAL | 25.12.2011- The proposal was not quite as romantic as I had dreamed/ hoped for however it was intimate and heart felt. Following a lovely Christmas Day with family, we returned to my parent's house, alone, feeling slightly engorged. Sitting on the sofa, we snuggled under our new "slanket" that we had received that day and Adam blurted out that he had found a designer for my engagement ring and how he wanted to show me!!? I was a tad confused and had to confirm with him, that he was asking me to marry him!? After a few more fumbles, he confirmed that "yes" this is what he was trying to ask! Of course, I said Yes straight away, I had been waiting for years for this moment!! We celebrated with a coffee and instantly started planning but my first question was, what about a ring? I had nothing to show!! The next day we headed straight over to Adams parent's house, to tell them of our good news and to raid the family jewels for a temporary engagement ring. I found a lovely sapphire and diamond ring that belonged to his grandmother and fitted perfectly, I wore this for the first 3 months of our engagement and also on my wedding day, as my something old.

THE VISION | We wanted our day to be local to where we grew up, with a relaxed atmosphere, child friendly and personal to us. I love colour and texture and I am a keen crafter, with a degree in textiles so I wanted the decorations to be colourful and tactile, and to make as many of them myself as possible.

We wanted the day to be filled with things that were personal to us, so we decided to serve a vintage themed afternoon tea upon arrival at the reception, as we love cakes! and then our favourite dinner, sausage and mash and lemon cheesecake for our wedding breakfast.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | We started planning our wedding in March 2012 and after writing an initial guest list of over 120 we decided to concentrate on marquees, guest houses and barns in the Sussex area. We spoke to friends and family for ideas on venues, caterers, florists and took ideas from friends and family weddings that we had attended. We started a wedding Pinterest board, collecting images and ideas for our big day including decorations, styling and photography and I compiled a colour scheme.

BUDGET | We were extremely lucky that my parents paid for our wedding reception, the overall budget was £19k.

THE VENUE | Struggling to find a suitable venue in Bexhill for the whole day, we decided to hold the ceremony at St Stephens church in Bexhill, a place that I was very familiar with and held many happy childhood memories and find a separate venue for the reception. We visited the Sussex barn open day in April 2012 and instantly felt that it was the right place for our reception, it was a beautiful, peaceful and it was a blank canvas allowing us to be creative and decorating it how we wished. However, the same day, we found out that I was pregnant, so we postponed our wedding plans for 6 months and then confirmed a date with the Sussex barn for 2014.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | My dress was a Justin Alexander in Albastar/ gold colour, an A line dress with intricate beaded lace, a sweetheart neckline and cap sleeves. A V back design with button detail and a chapel length trail.

I made my own hairband for the day, twisting Swarovski crystals with white and gold beads and flowers to create a personal hair piece. My wedding shoes were my best find, £12 from Primark! I initially dreamed of Jimmy Choo's but the Primark ones matched my dress perfectly and I also found a matching bag for the evening and bracelet, from Oasis and earrings from Monsoon.

FINDING THE DRESS | I found my wedding dress at a wedding show in Manchester from my local wedding shop Fairytale brides, it was a Justin Alexander sample that needed minor alterations and was heavily discounted. I loved the intricate lace and back detail of the dress, I am a clothing buyer so the fabrication, detail, fit and quality of workmanship was very important to me, it had to be special and make me feel amazing.

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Adam wanted a suit that he could re use after the wedding and one that he felt comfortable in. We liked the idea of an indigo blue suit with a crisp white shirt and bowtie and found his suit in M&S, along with matching navy suits for the best man, father of the bride and ushers. The bowtie was found in a local department store and his shoes were from Next.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | Along with a bible reading (Corinthians 13-4-13) we also had a poem, "I was meant for you" something that we can across whilst looking online for ideas and seemed to fit us as a couple. I walked in to and we both left to an acoustic version of an Elbow favourite "on a day like this" a band that we had seen together at Glastonbury and a song that we both love. We also had 2 hymns, Lord of the Dance (my maiden name was Dance) and Give me Joy to which our son, Henry danced in the aisles to both!

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS |I decided on just one bridesmaid, my best friend Jodie. This made choosing a dress easier, as we could choose a colour and style that suited her. I didn't imagine that we would end up with Fuchsia pink dress but after trying on several different colours and styles, we fell in love with the vibrancy of the fuchsia Coast dress and decided that it matched my personality and the feel of the wedding. Jodie wanted "Bling" so I found a sparkly hair clip and shoes to match and treated her to professional make up hair and nails for the day.

THE FLOWERS | I had the bouquets and button holes made by a local florist using images that I had found and bought the rest of the flowers at a local flower market with myself and my bridesmaid arranging them in various vases, buckets, jugs and bottles that I had collected. I love flowers and I wanted as many as possible in multiple colours, textures and sizes for both the venue and reception. I would recommend buying flowers directly from wholesale as you can save so much money and select exactly what you want although the 4am start may not be to everyone's liking (including my bridesmaid who still hasn't forgiven me!)

THE CAKE | I found inspiration for my cake whilst visiting wedding shows and decided that I wanted a colourful, Cath Kidston inspired, vintage style cake to match my favours and colour scheme. I designed the cake myself and found a local part time cake maker, recommended by a friend, who turned my drawing into reality. I was so pleased with the cake when I saw it and we had so many compliments, it was exactly what I had imagined and it tasted just as good!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | I liked Clare's style of photography as soon as we looked at the FitzGerald Photographic's website, the colours in her photos were vibrant, the images were candid and in a relaxed style. My parents had met her and her husband at an open day at the Sussex Barn and were impressed with their work and also said what a lovely couple they were. We wanted our photography to be informal and to capture all the details of the day with some casual and group photos of our guests and Clare and Marcus captured these perfectly. After speaking to Clare, I felt immediately at ease, we met prior to the day to discuss details and she was fantastic throughout the whole wedding day, going above and beyond her duties as a photographer.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | I wanted the decorations to create a romantic setting with a mix of eclectic, textural, colourful and personalised pieces. We were on a budget but we had time on our hands so I slowly collected things over 2 years, looking in local vintage shops, Ikea, EBay, Preloved, Poundland, Hobbycraft, Primark and building ideas up on Pinterest.

Adam was "chief pom- pom maker" buying tissue paper from a wholesaler in multiple colours; we made almost 80 and used them in the church and at the reception!! I wanted a twist on traditional bunting so I bought some lace and hand dyed it at home, in my colour scheme of fuchsia pink, coral, lilac, pale green before cutting it up and sewing it on bias binding and also making some traditional ditsy flowered bunting for outside the barn. I found wooden hearts (another Primark purchase) and added ribbon to go with the colour scheme for the interior and made a photo time line with some twine and mini pegs showing our journey together.

THE HONEYMOON | Having relocated from Manchester to Devon 6 months before the wedding and having rather a lot on our plate, we didn't get to go away for an official honeymoon as we had just completed on a house and moved in 4 days after getting married! Hopefully we will get to go away next year for a short break, maybe to Marrakech or Italy.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | So many! Our son Henry stole the show, escaping and running up the aisle, prior to the wedding party and then dancing and clapping in the aisles to the hymns during the ceremony, shouting "cheers" during the speeches and taking over the dance floor! Adam and myself going down to the beach between the ceremony and the reception to get extra photos on the beach, this allowed us to catch up and spend some time together prior to the reception. Our Morris Minor convertible car "Molly" both the car and chauffeur were amazing, it was great to drive through the Sussex countryside with the hood down. The Speeches...

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Make sure that you have the wedding day that you both want, arrange as much as possible prior to the wedding as the last few days before the wedding are manic and enjoy the day, it goes so quickly! I wish I had arranged for someone to collect our name places, favours and some details from the day as a memento.
