Outdoorsy & Rustic Homemade Blush Farm Wedding

Outdoorsy & Rustic Homemade Blush Farm Wedding

via

WWW readers Kev and Lou were married on the 7 th June 2014, choosing the beautiful setting of Huntstile Organic Farm, Somerset as their venue.

They envisioned an outdoorsy rustic countryside wedding, with hay bales and wellies. Sounds perfect right?

Lou donned a pretty lace gown with whimsy flower crown, Kev wore a three piece suit with Transformer brooch and the bridesmaids were super pretty in blush frocks. I adore the blooms, rustic DIY décor and letter lights.

Thanks so very much to Iva Carruthers for sharing her lovely images today.

THE PROPOSAL | The proposal came out of the blue on Christmas Eve 2012. I had always warned Kev that if he ever felt the need to propose that he'd better not make it some grand, cheesy gesture in public and that I'd be just as happy if he just popped it into conversation during our weekly shop! So he waited until Christmas eve and we were eating our toast for breakfast and the next thing I know he's on the floor (me thinking he's been dropping crumbs!!) and suddenly he pulls out a ring box from his pocket and proposes with a beautiful 18ct gold solitaire! The ring belonged to his late mum who sadly passed away 5 years ago. Needless to say it didn't take me long to say yes!

THE VISION | We wanted the day to reflect us as a couple and neither of us felt that a Grand Country house wedding would be right so I started researching alternative options and Farm Weddings. Living in the gorgeous Somerset countryside we wanted to create a really relaxed and out-doorsy type of wedding with no formal colour scheme and lots of rustic details, hay bales and wellies!

THE PLANNING PROCESS | I became addicted to wedding blogs the minute we became engaged and I stumbled across WWW, and then spent the next year and a half religiously checking in every day. Being a 'Costing's Analyst', one of the first things I did was to create an all singing all dancing budget spreadsheet which we tried our hardest to stick to although did creep up along the way!

We gave ourselves a year and a half in order to save as much money as possible. This had positives and negatives.... on the positive we had loads of time to plan and as I did so much of the DIY myself it gave me enough time to get everything done without a last minute dash at the end which save a lot of stress. On the negative, it also meant that by the time the wedding came around our ideas had evolved and change several times!

BUDGET | We managed to save a fair amount in the time we had, and my mum and dad were fab in helping us out and loaning us the rest! Our budget did escalate slightly but we did our best to keep costs under control and hunt out the best deals!

THE VENUE | I stumbled across Huntstile Organic Farm when searching for Farm Venues in Somerset and the minute I saw the website I knew it was a perfect fit for me and Kev. We drew up a short list and visited about 3 or 4 different venues. Which I think is important to do as every venue has slightly different packages and has different costs involved.

Accommodation at the venue was also important to us as we wanted to create a whole wedding weekend (why not make it last as long as possible!) and have all of our lovely friends and family around us to celebrate

We first saw Huntstile on a cold February day, but even then the farmhouse was so beautiful and Lizzie and John were so friendly and relaxed that I could tell it would be the most amazing venue. Getting married outside was another of the selling points, as Huntstile has a Stone Circle on top of a hill with the most amazing views of the Mendips, reached by a Tractor and trailer ride! Although not a legal ceremony, we could arrange a blessing there.

It took us a long time to decide how to work the legal side of the marriage. We toyed with the idea of having a registry office ceremony the day before or sneaking off with just parents. However in the end we decided that all of our close family and friends would like to see both ceremonies. And we made sure that our hand fasting blessing ceremony was different enough, so we did both in one day! Lizzie recommended Fran, a local celebrant who actually built the stone circle for his own wedding. Fran was so lovely and helped us tailor the ceremony exactly how we wanted it.

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | I wore a chiffon dress by White Rose with a Charlie Brear lace jacket and sash. I wore the jacket back to front and had the buttons moved to the back as I preferred the lower V neckline and the high lace back, so my dress really was a one off!

My shoes were from the New Look sale (bargains!) and I wore a Rainbow club vintage headpiece for the registry office and a flower crown made by the florist to the blessing ceremony!

My necklace was my something old and borrowed from Kev's mum, so it felt like we had a piece of her with us all day.

FINDING THE DRESS | My one slight regret from finding the dress is that I should have tried more on! I felt guilty for making my mum, sister and best friend sit there while I waltzed around like a princess! My advice would be to make sure you try at least one of each style on before you rule out, even if you think you know what you want!

I started my search on the high street and thought I had found the perfect dress from Phase Eight in the sale for £200.... amazing! However niggling doubts started to set in about the high neckline, whether it was 'Bridal' enough, and something in me made me keep looking. So I started searching bridal boutiques.

I was recommended Perfect day by a friend, and the girls were so helpful in helping me find the right dress. My dream dress would have been a Jenny Packham lace floaty number, however my budget and my hips wouldn't of allowed for that! Julia from Perfect day picked out a fairly plain chiffon strapless dress which I wasn't very enthusiastic about trying on (I was adamant I didn't want a strapless dress!), however the minute she suggested to add the Charlie Brear lace jacket and blush sash, I was transformed into a beautiful lacey vintage princess!

In the months between ordering the dress and it arriving I did have slight doubts, which I think is natural. However as soon as the dress arrived and I tried it on, they soon vanished! (Have faith in your decision making skills girls!!)

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Kev wore a Grey 3 piece suit, hired from Austin Reed. He settled on that as I over-ruled him on the Duck Dynasty Camo Suit idea!! I wanted his outfit to be as much of a surprise to me as my outfit would be to him, so I let him choose the boys outfits and I managed not to ask too many questions!

THE READINGS & MUSIC | The music for our day was so important to us, as we both big music lovers. Our tastes are quite different but luckily they kind of meet in the middle so we managed to find some we both agreed on. I walked down the aisle to 'Everlong' acoustic version, my all-time favourite song. And our first dance was to 'Make it witchu' a Queens of the Stone Age song, another of our favourite bands.

One of my first wedding finds was 'Til There was Uke'. Stacey and Lucy, who I spotted at a vintage wedding fair in Bristol playing gorgeous covers on the Ukulele. One of my most favourite memories from the day was listening to the girls play us down the aisle of our woodland blessing to 'Islands in the Sun' by Weezer and 'Get Lucky' by Pharrell.

Our readings were 'The One' read by our good friend Simon at the registry office and 'This Day I Married my Best Friend' read at our blessing by our friend Christian. We felt these readings really echoed how we felt without being too soppy or traditional

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | My sister Nic and best friend Emma were my blushing bridesmaids and had to endure 18 months of wedding 'chit chat' and my late night dilemmas about timings and décor! (Sorry about that girls!)

Their dresses were from Mango, and we ordered on the off chance after seeing them in a magazine. They were perfect and floaty and ethereal and the blush colour perfectly complimented my dress and sash.

THE FLOWERS | Lisa from Dotty Daisy's was so amazing. We clicked straight away and she got exactly the sort of wedding we wanted. We had milk churns of flowers outside the marquee which looked just picked from a meadow, and my bouquet and flower crown echoed this but with some lovely ice-creamy coloured peonies and roses to tie in with our dresses. Lisa also decorated the lovely willow archway at the stone circle to create a beautiful entrance and focal point.

THE CAKE | My clever bridesmaid Emma makes novelty cakes and volunteered to make our wedding cake. We went for a tiered naked Victoria sponge decorated with flowers and fruit. Topped with a homemade Bride and Groom cake topper (Kev as Optimus Prime). The cake was the most amazing cake ever and way more beautiful than we could have imagined. We were completely blown away by it and had so many comments about it!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | My lovely work friend Iva is a very talented photographer who does a lot of weddings in her spare time. We were so pleased to have Iva as our photographer, she put us completely at ease as neither of us particularly enjoys having our pictures taken. We wanted our photos to be relaxed and informal and tell the story of our day, not posed and awkward. Iva captured so many beautiful moments that we will both treasure forever.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | OK, here goes..! I have always been a little bit crafty and so couldn't wait to get stuck in to our wedding decorations! A lot of the details from our day were handmade. From the 120m of bunting made along with my mum and dad (dads a demon on the sewing machine!) to the tissue pom-poms, and hessian table runners.

I found an old vintage suitcase from eBay and re-lined it with Laura Ashley fabric to create our vintage table plan. The 'Table plan' and 'Cards' garland were from a fab website called 'A little bit rustic' and were made to measure.

I collected various crochet lace mats and runners for the table centrepieces and lace trims to decorate jam jars. I found charity shops and flea markets the best place to pick up a bargain!

We decided that we wanted a slightly different guest book, so we bought an instant camera and collected loads of fancy dress bits and made a photo-booth guest book. I made a large picture frame from lengths of dado rail cut to size and screwed together and sprayed gold, my finest piece of DIY ever!! For the guest book I bought a plain scrap book from Paperchase and brightened it up with some cut out scrabble letters and fabric.

Place cards were made from kraft luggage tags with lace washi tape and stamped names, which tied in perfectly with our Kraft invites

I found the metal jugs from eBay for our table centrepieces

I made chalkboard signs so people didn't get lost down the country lanes

We had great fun making the Limoncello favours! Definitely a great idea, and they went down well (a little too well) with the guests!

I also set my dad the project of making giant K & L illuminated letters, which I had seen online but were expensive to hire. So we cut them out of MDF and drilled tiny holes around the outside so that we could push through a set of LED fairy lights. I'm so pleased with the outcome and they looked fab in the party room!

I made a crepe paper streamer curtain for our cake table backdrop. I just attached the streamers to a dowelling rod and cut them to length, it was so easy and the effect was great to liven up the plain marquee.

Kev has a slight obsession with Transformers and no wedding of his would be complete without featuring an Optimus Prime or two, so I decided to surprise him and his best man/ushers with handmade Transformer brooches to wear during the day.

We hired a vintage Ice Cream bicycle to serve Ice cream to our guests during the afternoon which was an absolute hit, although me and Kev are completely gutted neither of us got around to having one!!

I need to mention the fab job that Flo from Charlie Scribble did on our invites. I found Flo on the internet and loved the hand-drawn whimsical style to her work. She hand-drew an illustration of the Farm for our invites and even incorporated our pet chickens in the background! I then bundled up the finished goods in twine with a personalised luggage tag label before posting them. We were so pleased with the outcome!

THE HONEYMOON | We had a night in a luxury spa hotel the night after the wedding which we both needed to relax and unwind as we were so tired and emotional after the wedding. Our main honeymoon is in December and we are having a 3 week tour and beach holiday to Vietnam and Cambodia, a real once in a lifetime trip. We decided to wait for our honeymoon partly due to the climate in South East Asia, but also partly so that we had something to look forward to after the wedding. There was such a build up to the big day that it was so nice to be around afterwards to bask in the aftermath for a bit!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | I had no nerves at all but standing outside the room listening to the start of my entrance song did make my stomach do a quick little flip, but the minute I spotted Kev I completely relaxed and the smile didn't leave my face all day

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Everything will fall into place! I was really surprised at how little I had to do on the actual day, everything was taken care of already by the fab team at Huntstile and friends and family, so we really could just relax and let the good times roll!
