Venice Wedding Celebration with Moumou Photography | Fly Away Bride

The couple we have for you today are truly well-travelled: Caroline and Jacopo hail from Brazil and Italy and planned their wedding in Venice from Australia! Just wait until you see the magnificent basilica their ceremony was held in, and we love the beautiful shots of the couple in a traditional gondola taken against the turquoise backdrop of the lagoon. Their Venetian wedding celebration was captured by one of our regular contributors, Moumou Photography. More from the bride below with specific advice on planning a wedding in Venice.

HOW THEY MET

"In 2012 I was travelling around Europe and decided to go to Venice for a day. I went to a bar with some friends there and my future husband was at the table next to us. After chatting we discovered that he was born and raised in Venice and I was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. We decided to keep in touch online and some months later he visited me in Brazil and we got to know each other better. He proposed to me with a beautiful ring in a restaurant in Verona. Afterwards we went to Sydney for seven months. We came back to Brazil to have our wedding ceremony, then travelled to Venice a week later to do it again! We ended up having two beautiful weddings very close together.

DECIDING ON THE LOCATION

We chose the Basilica de Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari for our ceremony- it's one of the most magnificent churches in Venice and we love the beautiful paintings inside. We had our reception at Hotel Cipriani on Giudecca Island in Venice . We chose this hotel because of its luxury feel, classic cuisine, fabulous view of the lagoon and St. Marks Square, and its beautiful salon decorated with chandeliers. It also has a wonderful garden that we loved having aperitifs in with our guests before the dinner and party.

PLANNING

We planned the wedding from Australia so had to do everything online and by email. That was definitely our biggest challenge; organising two weddings in different parts of the world and living in a third part, far away from both our home cities of Venice and São Paulo. We used a wedding planner, who were our savior during the wedding preparation: The Venice Wedding Planner were an invaluable help with both suppliers and bureaucracy. Anna Bozza was in charge of the preparation and she proved her experience and knowledge in the planning, on the day and even made the post wedding experience great. If Anna wasn't there, I doubt that the wedding would have been so perfectly magic.

STLYE/THEME

We wanted our wedding to have a traditional Venetian feel. I chose a colour scheme of mainly blue (the same color we had for our Brazil ceremony, but with different nuances). The invitation was navy, while the decoration was a light and delicate blue with purple hues. We wanted the Venetian atmosphere to pervade the whole celebration, so our invitations were designed with the Palazzo Ducale windows and we had typical bomboniere favours, murano glass and confetti, masks for the photo booth, etc.

BEST DECISION

Our best decision was to go for photos to San Giorgio Island, in front of St. Mark's Square. It was summer and the sun was really lighting up the lagoon. We were lucky that we found some sculptures at San Giorgio Island that were only there for the Venice Biennale, and we got to take wonderful pictures with the square as a backdrop.

REGRETS/ADVICE

I regret choosing a DJ over a band. The DJ seemed to be a resort singer and didn't play energetic songs, so even though people got excited at the start, he couldn't keep the energy going for the night. It was a pity, because everything was perfect otherwise! Our advice would be to hire a good wedding planner. Ask for an assistant (or get one of your bridesmaids) to be with you when you get your make and hair done- you may need to buy something last minute! Be sure to get the preparation on photo and/or video: it's beautiful to have this time before the ceremony captured.Specifically for a wedding in Venice, we would tell couples to to get married in the summer period (June until September), so you won't have a risk of high water on your wedding day, take a ride in a decorated gondola at the lagoon, and finally go to St. Marks and San Giorgio to take beautiful pictures at the sunset if possible, you won't regret it!"
