You'd be hard-pressed to find a bride more stunning than Rana. Dressed in Pakistani wedding day attire she bought in Kuwait (where the bride grew up) and painted with henna, her look was bold and colorful. These two college sweethearts were married in downtown Portland, surrounded by friends and family (the ceremony was officiated by William's godfather). What was most important for you to include in your wedding - what was your biggest priority?

Our biggest priority was to put together a great party for our guests. When we decided to have a wedding, we knew it would be not just a celebration of our love for each other, but the love we've been surrounded by our whole lives. We used the wedding as an excuse to get back in touch with a lot of old friends, and revitalize those relationships.

What was your favorite detail?

Our favorite detail was definitely the table centerpieces and flowers. They were gorgeous, and the added candlelight brought more intimacy to the space.

What was your wedding theme or style? How did you choose your theme?

Our theme was a cultural fusion wedding between American, Kuwaiti, and Pakistani traditions. Will is American, born and raised in Portland, OR. I am a Pakistani citizen but was raised in Kuwait. This past year, Will was able to visit Kuwait for the first time. During the visit we realized the importance of place and culture in our relationship and in our personal lives. The ceremony was more American, and the reception was more Pakistani. We played Arabic, Indian, and English songs. The food was Pacific Northwestern, and the beer and wine were all local. The decorative style was more colorful like Pakistani weddings.

Fun, tender, intimate, and whimsical.

Your first dance song and why you chose it:

Our first dance song was "The Way You Look Tonight" as sung by James Darren. We chose this song off his album This One's From the Heart, which was a compilation of some of the songs he sang as the character Vic Fontaine on the TV show Star Trek: Deep Space 9, one of our favorite shows.

What is your advice to couples who are planning weddings now?

On a practical, nuts-and-bolts level: Start early (especially with the venue and caterer)! There are so many small details, make sure you can keep track of them, or consider getting outside help (even professional help). In hindsight, things might have gone a little more smoothly for us.

On a personal note: No two weddings have to be alike. Personalize it in the small details. From our first dance song, to the marquee outside (which said "The One with Will and Rana's Wedding" a reference to the TV show Friends), to the gold plates with purple napkins (our college colors, we met in college), we found ways to surround ourselves with memories, and hidden gems.
